Monte Sião brings together several distinct travel interests: religious tradition, handcrafted porcelain and views of the foothills of the Serra da Mantiqueira. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between places of religious remembrance, museum culture and routes with urban or rural connections. That way, you can organize your priorities according to your interests, rather than treating all the themes as a single itinerary. The most distinctive features are the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Medalha Milagrosa, the blue-and-white porcelain tradition and Morro Pelado.

Sanctuary and religious remembrance

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Medalha Milagrosa was elevated to the status of archdiocesan sanctuary by decree of the Archbishop of Pouso Alegre on November 5, 1999, in view of the large influx of tourists and pilgrims. The date and the reason for the decision link the sanctuary’s religious standing with the importance of pilgrimages to this place. Next to the Santuário Nossa Senhora da Medalha Milagrosa is the Sala das Graças. It preserves testimonies, objects and photographs relating to graces received by devotees of Senhora da Medalha Milagrosa. The room gives this religious focus a personal, commemorative dimension, while the elevation to sanctuary status defines its institutional standing.

Crafts and museum culture

Another way to explore local culture is through porcelain. Since 1959, Porcelana Monte Sião has maintained the tradition of blue-and-white porcelain, crafted and hand-painted, with each piece being unique. Production is still carried out by hand. Color and craftsmanship are equally important to this tradition: it is not just about porcelain as a product category, but also about individual handiwork.

The Museu Histórico e Geográfico de Monte Sião is also home to the EGMS Gallery, a permanent educational exhibition in an artificial cave measuring 15 meters in length. It displays various stalactite and cave formations. The gallery focuses both on the formations on display and on its distinctive exhibition space. Porcelain and the gallery offer different perspectives: one is about design and handcrafted production, the other about making cave formations accessible through exhibits.

Morro Pelado and route planning

Morro Pelado reaches an elevation of 1,319 meters and offers views of the foothills of the Serra da Mantiqueira. Hiking trails lead to Morro Pelado and Morro do Cruzeiro; it is important to be accompanied by a local guide on these trails. The viewpoint is associated with Morro Pelado, while the trails mentioned lead to both hills.

The tourist routes also have different geographical reference points. Rota 7 covers Monte Sião’s urban tourist attractions, as well as nearby attractions that can be reached without traveling far from the town. Rota 8 covers tourist attractions along MG459, the main highway serving Monte Sião, and nearby destinations that are easy to reach without traveling far from this main road. Rota 7 is therefore centered on the town, while Rota 8 follows the main road and its surroundings. The ROTAS DOS VENTOS program is different: it promotes the development of tourism in the rural area of the municipality of Monte Sião.

Finding your way around the center and a July festival

Praça Prefeito Mário Zucato is in the center of Monte Sião and features cypress sculptures. Also in the center is the Receptivo Turístico, a bus covered in knitwear that is intended to inform tourists about the city’s main offerings. Both provide concrete points of reference for finding your way around, but in different ways: Praça is a named square with sculptures, while the bus is intended to provide tourist information.

The traditional Tricofest – Festival de Inverno de Monte Sião may also be a reason to visit for those interested in culture. It takes place in July and features artistic performances for all age groups. The program may vary from year to year. If the festival affects your travel dates, check the dates and current program in advance.
