João Monlevade can be explored through three distinct themes: Parque Natural Municipal do Areão, historic sites and local markets. The nature park represents the city’s ecological focus; its historical connections range from the city’s founding to the steel industry. Markets mentioned in municipal notices dated June 30, 2022, add organic produce, handicrafts and events to this picture. When planning your trip, consider which of these themes matters most to you.

Nature within the city

Parque Natural Municipal do Areão covers 199,309.28 square meters within the city of João Monlevade. A municipal decree dated September 16, 2024, states that the park’s purpose is to preserve ecosystems of great ecological importance. Its fauna and flora are diverse. Areão thus offers a distinct focus alongside the city’s historical connections: the emphasis is on ecosystems and biodiversity within the city. Its area and conservation purpose provide two different perspectives on the nature park—its physical extent and its ecological focus.

Cultural heritage and city history

A diocesan article describes Matriz São José Operário as the most important landmark in João Monlevade. Another form of cultural heritage is represented by Associação Cultural Marujos de João Monlevade, formerly known as Guarda de Marujos de Nossa Senhora do Rosário. It was recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality in 2010; the city council reported on this recognition in 2023. These are two distinct aspects: the prominent status of a landmark and the municipal recognition of a cultural association under its current and former names.

The historic Fazenda Solar de Monlevade was the first residence of João Monlevade, one of the city’s founders. Museu Monlevade do Ferro e Aço, by contrast, documents the beginnings of the steel industry in Minas Gerais. The two sites emphasize different aspects of history: the fazenda connects João Monlevade with a city founder, while the museum focuses on the state’s industrial history.

Hotel Cassino is also among the city’s protected cultural heritage sites: the city administration designated it a historic landmark because of its cultural importance to João Monlevade. The measure is based on municipal decree 034/2006. While Matriz is described as the most important landmark, Hotel Cassino is notable for the formal protection of a building.

Markets and local produce

A municipal notice dated June 30, 2022, listed Saturday as the day and João Monlevade as the location for the traditional Feira da Agricultura Familiar. Organic vegetables, fruit and legumes were on offer. As the notice listed the weekly schedule and location as they stood at that time, check before your trip whether the venue and hours are still current.

Another municipal notice from the same date listed the second weekend of each month, on Fridays and Saturdays, in João Monlevade, for Feira da Economia Popular Solidária. Its offerings included performances by local artists, handicrafts, traditional foods and clothing. The two markets have different focuses: Feira da Agricultura Familiar centers on organic foods, while Feira da Economia Popular Solidária combines performances with a variety of goods. Before your visit, check the current event dates and, for this market, the program as well.
