Caxambu brings together the mineral water tradition of Parque das Águas, protected landmarks and views from Morro Caxambu. When choosing a destination, you can first decide whether springs, cultural history or a view over the city and park should shape your stay. These interests can also provide a practical starting point when looking for hotels in Caxambu: begin with what you would like to discover there.

Mineral Water and Parque das Águas

Parque das Águas de Caxambu is a municipal tourist attraction and also a natural heritage site with twelve therapeutic mineral water springs. The park’s mineral water collection was registered as intangible cultural heritage by a decree signed on February 23, 2021, and recognized as cultural and intangible heritage. So if you are considering Caxambu for its springs, the cultural significance of its mineral water is also part of the picture.

Architecture and City History

Igreja Santa Isabel da Hungria is a neo-Gothic church: it was inaugurated in 1897 and listed by IEPHA in 1978 under Decree No. 19,513 of October 26, 1978. Praça 16 de Setembro is also protected. IEPHA listed it on March 1, 1999; Caxambu’s municipal heritage protection council followed later.

Balneário Hidroterápico adds another architectural dimension. Built at the beginning of the 20th century, the neoclassical building is richly adorned with French stained-glass windows. By contrast, the former function of the historic building housing Museu Histórico e Genealógico de Caxambu comes to the fore: it was built in 1896 for water tanks that supplied the city for decades. Here, distinguished design meets a practical role in the city’s water supply. The former railway station was revitalized in 2019 and converted into Centro Cultural Estação Ferroviária.

Morro Caxambu and Different Viewpoint Experiences

Morro Caxambu is 1,090 meters high and offers panoramic views of the city. At its summit stands the Cristo-Redentor monument, a 15-meter-high statue. The cable car runs from near Parque das Águas to the summit, offering panoramic views of the park. Caminho das Águas offers a different experience: this ecological walk begins on Rua Monsenhor João de Deus and follows the Morro trail to a viewpoint. This gives you two distinct options: a cable car ride with views of the park, or a walking route to a viewpoint.

Market and Exhibitions

Feira Sabor e Arte takes place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Praça 16 de Setembro. Items on offer include jellies, bread, herbs, craft-brewed beer and handmade snacks. Check the schedule before your visit, as regular market hours may change. Museu Histórico e Genealógico de Caxambu hosts traveling exhibitions in collaboration with other museums; if you would like to plan a visit to an exhibition, check the dates during your stay in advance.

These different themes can help you choose Caxambu according to your interests: mineral water and natural heritage, protected sites, architectural history, or views and walking routes. You can use these interests to guide your travel decision before turning to the hotel options.
