A spring enclosed in stone, churches with their own architectural histories, and railway heritage give Bom Despacho several cultural and historical points of interest. Here, different questions take center stage: How did the settlement develop, what construction phases can be seen in the churches, and what traces did the railway leave behind?
The Spring and the Settlement’s History
Biquinha is a historic spring set into a stone wall; its water has been captured since 1900. It lies in the center of Bom Despacho, between Praça da Matriz and Rua Lambari. In 2007, it was designated as protected historical and cultural heritage of Bom Despacho under City Hall Decree No. 3,375.
Churches with Their Own Histories
Capela do Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz do Monte, also known as Igrejinha da Cruz do Monte, features colonial architecture. It stands in the Bairro Ana Rosa, also known as Tabatinga. The chapel is considered the starting point for the settlement of Bom Despacho. It therefore brings together a distinctive architectural style and a special role in the history of the settlement.
Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Bom Despacho was built between 1927 and 1948 with support from the local population. Its Gothic style and 58.73-meter-high tower are specific architectural features. In 2016, the church was protected as tangible cultural heritage. Unlike the chapel associated with the beginning of the settlement, the Matriz can be understood primarily through its construction period and architecture.
Railway Heritage and Historic Buildings
Estação Ferroviária de Bom Despacho opened on October 21, 1921, in the Vila de Bom Despacho. It was built after the arrival of the Estrada de Ferro Paracatu. Another aspect of railway history is steam locomotive No. 325, known as Maria Fumaça: Baldwin Locomotive Works built it in 1911, and it was imported from the United States to Brazil in 1918. In 2003, the locomotive was protected as tangible cultural heritage of Bom Despacho. The Complexo da Vila Militar was also protected in 2015 by the municipal Secretariat of Culture and Tourism.
Reinado Culture and Public Space
Every year, Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário brings Reinado culture together in Bom Despacho. The present-day church was built on a private initiative, inspired by the devotion of Alice Cardoso and the faithful of Nossa Senhora do Rosário. The Festa de Reinado de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is listed as protected intangible cultural heritage of Bom Despacho.
Praça Olegário Maciel is used as a place to relax, as well as for markets and events. It includes the distinctive wall and staircase of Praça da Estação. Alongside the churches, spring and railway heritage, this adds a public square with a variety of uses.
One useful distinction when choosing a theme: tangible cultural heritage is protected in the case of Igreja Matriz and the steam locomotive, while the Festa de Reinado is listed as intangible cultural heritage. This places a building and a technical object alongside a religious tradition.
