In 1876, Manoel Batista Barroso and Gabriel Paula do Amaral became the first settlers on the right bank of the RibeirĂŁo Cachoeira Alta, five kilometers upstream from Barra do Rio Claro. The nearby RibeirĂŁo gave the village its name. The river is therefore part of both the early settlement and the naming of the village.

From the First Settlement to Local History

The year after the first settlement, several families from Minas Gerais arrived and expanded the settlement’s core. Cachoeira Alta developed around the Nossa Senhora da Abadia Chapel. This makes it possible to clearly trace the first stages of development: the 1876 settlement was followed by the arrival of families from Minas Gerais, while the chapel became the focal point of the village’s origins. For travelers interested in local history, this clearly distinguishes the beginnings on the Ribeirão from the growth of the settlement’s core the following year.

Church, Old Town and Religious Tradition

Nossa Senhora da Abadia Church connects the village’s origins with its historic layout. A report dated April 3, 2002, placed the old town in its surroundings and identified the city’s oldest houses and the public library at the time. This gives the area around the church more than a purely religious role in local history: it is also associated with the old town and the oldest buildings. A 2002 account also counted the Festa de Nossa Senhora da Abadia among Cachoeira Alta’s most important festivals. It reported that the patron saint was honored in the area around the church with processions, Masses and religious celebrations. Both the historic buildings and the religious festival tradition therefore offer distinct ways to explore the local culture.

Serra and Festival Culture

The Serra de Cachoeira Alta offers another distinct focus. It features numerous streams and waterfalls and was described in 2002 as one of the local community’s major attractions. This offers a clear distinction for choosing your focus: the Serra represents the landscape, while the church and old town reflect the town’s historical development. A 2002 report described the Festa do Peão as an eagerly awaited annual festival featuring rodeos, skill games, tournaments and shows. Compared with the religiously oriented Festa de Nossa Senhora da Abadia, the historical account of the Festa do Peão focuses on competitions and entertainment.

A Focus for Your Trip

If you are looking for a vacation rental in Cachoeira Alta, start with the purpose of your trip: should your stay focus primarily on local history, or also take in the landscape? The local history and the Serra offer different starting points.
