Centuries-old manor houses are part of Vargem Alta’s Historical and Religious Route. It passes through the municipal seat and the districts of Jaciguá and Boa Esperança. For those who want to explore the cultural heritage beyond the municipal seat, it offers a route spanning the entire municipality.
Historic Uses and Local History
The Colégio Salesiano is located in the district of Boa Esperança. The building was constructed in the early 20th century and housed the municipality of Vargem Alta’s first educational institution for more than 60 years. After serving as an educational institution, it hosted religious gatherings; it has since been converted into a technical education center. This sequence of uses links the history of education with religious history, while the later conversion marks another phase in the building’s history.
Waterfalls and Protected Areas
Cachoeira do Caiado is located in the Comunidade de Guiomar, within the municipality of Vargem Alta. This destination includes a natural waterfall, a lake with crystal-clear water, and a forest trail. It can be reached via the ES 375 road between Vargem Alta and Iconha. The lake and forest trail, as well as the waterfall, shape the nature experience here.
Cachoeira do Brother offers a different focus: at about 40 m high, it is the tallest waterfall in the municipality of Vargem Alta. It has a swimming pool, as well as a picnic and sunbathing area. The two destinations differ in their specific features: Cachoeira do Caiado has a lake and forest trail alongside the waterfall, while Cachoeira do Brother stands out for its height and the areas described above.
Parque Estadual SaĂra-Apunhalada is located in the municipality of Vargem Alta and is a “full protection” conservation area. It covers 234,667 hectares. This offers a different perspective from the individual waterfall destinations, where the key features are the protection category and area size.
Birdwatching, Local Products, and the Regional Context
The Mata de Caetés region and RPPN Monte Verde are considered suitable places for birdwatching. Both are located in the district of Castelinho in the municipality of Vargem Alta. They complement the waterfalls and protected area with a distinct nature focus: observing birds.
SĂtio Casa da Mata in Alto Castelinho is 32 km from the municipal seat. Tastings and sales of homemade products are offered there, including cheese, ricotta, juice, and grape jelly. Check before your visit whether tastings and sales are currently available.
As a municipality, Vargem Alta is part of the Rota dos Vales e do Café. The tourist route also includes Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Muqui, and Mimoso do Sul. This connection places Vargem Alta within a broader regional context, in addition to the specific cultural and nature destinations within the municipality.
