Serra offers a range of experiences for a trip, from architectural history and cultural heritage to hiking trails and outdoor activities. These include the Jesuit complex in Nova Almeida, historic sites in Serra-Sede and Carapina, and Mestre Álvaro.

History and Cultural Heritage

The Museu Histórico da Serra is located in Serra-Sede, in one of the town’s oldest buildings: a mansion belonging to the Castello family. The building is one of the few surviving examples of 19th-century architecture. Its architectural history is therefore not just a backdrop to the museum, but part of what makes the site culturally significant.

In Nova Almeida stands the Igreja e Residência dos Reis Magos, an important Jesuit architectural complex. The first chapel was built on January 6, 1557; the church was completed in 1580. The two dates mark different stages in the building’s history. Those interested in historic architecture will find another point of interest here, alongside the building in Serra-Sede, with a history dating back to the 16th century.

The Sítio Histórico e Arqueológico de Carapina includes the Capela São João Batista de Carapina and the ruins of a mansion. Both bear witness to settlement in the area. The chapel and ruins thus offer a different perspective on history from the surviving mansion in Serra-Sede or the Jesuit complex in Nova Almeida.

Cultural institutions and artistic spaces are also among Serra’s many facets. The Associação das Bandas de Congo da Serra (ABC) in Serra-Sede is one of the most important institutions dedicated to protecting and preserving the cultural heritage of Espírito Santo. Vila das Artes in the Bairro São Francisco/Jacaraípe is a collection of creative and artistic spaces; its origins are closely linked to Casa de Pedra.

The Santuário das Formigas Bordadeiras, also called Santuário de Nossa Senhora das Lágrimas, features galleries displaying embroidered leaves, along with explanatory panels. The site also has a prayer area and a sanctuary where Mass is celebrated. Before visiting the Santuário, it is advisable to check current visiting arrangements.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Activities

Mestre Álvaro reaches an elevation of 833 meters. Its hiking trails vary in difficulty, with access points via Serra-Sede, Pitanga, Queimado and Furnas. When choosing a hike, both the nature of the trail and the most suitable access point are relevant. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

The Parque da Cidade offers another way to spend time outdoors. It is open daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and has a tennis court, multi-purpose sports courts, a walking path, a playground and a skatepark. Alongside hiking trails, visitors can choose from activities for walking and various sports.

The Parque da Cidade is also home to the Centro de Estudo, Pesquisa e Conservação de Bromeliaceae e Outras Herbáceas do Município da Serra. It offers environmental education with a bromeliad garden and a nursery. The program is aimed primarily at schools, but the area is open to visitors. It is advisable to check visiting arrangements before going.

Jacaraípe and Manguinhos

Jacaraípe is known as “Vila do Surf.” The waves there are consistent almost all year round. This focus differs from the cultural sites and hiking trails that appeal to other interests; when planning, you can decide which aspects of Serra matter most for your stay.

In Manguinhos, the traditional Manguinhos Gourmet festival brings together chefs, restaurants and lovers of good food. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.
