You can explore Aracruz’s culture through several themes: the architectural and religious history of Igreja Matriz São João Batista, public art in Praça Monsenhor Guilherme Schmitz, and the history of Mercado Municipal and Feirinha de Aracruz. These themes range from a church chronology to market and cultural life. Choose a focus based on your interest in religious tradition, plaza design, or local products and economic development.

Church history in Aracruz

Igreja Matriz São João Batista is located in the Centro of Aracruz (Sede). Construction of the present-day church began on January 26, 1950; the first Mass in the new Matriz was celebrated on December 25, 1957. These dates mark two distinct stages in the building’s history: the start of construction and the first Mass in the new building. São João Batista is the patron saint of the Matriz, the parish, and the municipality of Aracruz. The liturgical feast of his birth is celebrated on June 24. The church thus connects a specific building history with a religious tradition that is also rooted at the municipal level. For travelers interested in sacred history, the building’s chronology and the role of its patron saint are two distinct aspects of this theme.

Plaza design and public art

Praça Monsenhor Guilherme Schmitz offers a different focus. As part of its revitalization, it was made fully accessible; a municipal report from 2016 documented these features. Check its current condition before visiting. The same report gives its area as approximately 4,000 m²; subsequent construction changes may have affected this figure. A tourist attraction documented on the Praça in 2021 is a graffiti mural featuring the wings of the Periquito Rei. The work was painted by the Cult Bio collective from Barra do Riacho. The artwork may change. This offers a different direction from the Matriz: here, the focus is on the design of a plaza and a specific artistic motif, while the church is about architectural history and religious tradition.

Market history and local culture

Mercado Municipal is located in the Distrito Sede and was established in the mid-1980s. A 2018 municipal report ranked it among the places with the highest foot traffic in the municipal city center of Aracruz. Feirinha de Aracruz is a distinct focus: it brings together handicrafts, food, local products, and cultural performances. It began in the mid-1990s, initially bringing together around 15 entrepreneurs. Over time, it developed into an important place for work, community life, and strengthening the local economy. While the report on Mercado Municipal highlights its high foot traffic in the city center, the history of Feirinha also explicitly describes work, community, and the local economy. The two names can thus be linked to distinct timelines and points of emphasis.

These themes offer different ways to explore Aracruz without having to focus on just one side of the town’s history.
