São Félix is shaped by its historic architecture, largely preserved original urban layout, and location on the Rio Paraguaçu. The town’s character includes colonial buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, as well as a historic urban structure with a railway line, former train station, and riverfront. Two churches from the late 18th century introduce different stylistic influences. Together, these themes offer a choice between individual architectural forms and the broader urban context.

Colonial Architecture and a Protected Ensemble

The architectural, urban, and landscape ensemble of São Félix was designated a heritage site by IPHAN in 2010. The term “ensemble” draws attention to architecture, urban planning, and landscape as interconnected elements. The original urban layout is largely preserved. Colonial buildings from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries give the town’s history a broad time span.

Two churches illustrate specific differences in their stylistic influences. The Igreja da Matriz de Deus Menino was built in the late 18th century and has a typically Rococo-style façade. The Igreja do Senhor São Félix was also built in the late 18th century; it shows an imitation of European Renaissance art. Both churches date from a similar period, but reflect different design influences: Rococo on the façade of one, and Renaissance art as the model for the other. To place them in time, keep the dates distinct: 2010 refers to the ensemble’s heritage designation, while the late 18th century is when the two churches were built. The Casa da Cultura is also among São Félix’s protected monuments and public spaces.

Urban Layout on the Rio Paraguaçu

The largely preserved urban layout is not just a matter of buildings. It also includes the route of the railway line to the former train station and the riverfront. Thus, former infrastructure and the riverbank are part of the inherited urban structure. São Félix lies on the Rio Paraguaçu, linking the riverfront and the town’s geographical location to the same river. The Ponte Dom Pedro II has connected São Félix and Cachoeira for more than a century. This extends the perspective beyond the town itself to a connection between two cities: the bridge and the railway line included in the historic layout represent different spatial connections.

Fazenda Santa Bárbara and Museu Hansen Bahia

Fazenda Santa Bárbara later opened to the public as the Museu Hansen Bahia. The property in São Félix covers a total of 25 hectares, of which 6.2 hectares are used by the museum. If you plan to visit the Museu Hansen Bahia, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
