In Santo Estêvão, traditional festivals meet cultural attractions and leisure activities by the water. Whether you are planning a trip or looking for a vacation rental, there are several ways to shape your stay: focus on the festivals and cultural venues in town, or explore places such as Lagoa de Plínio and Porto Castro Alves. If you are traveling for a particular event, check the specific dates in advance.
Festivals and Culture in Santo Estêvão
Praça Sete de Setembro was built in 1924 by municipal administrator Temístocles Pires de Cerqueira and has become a venue for the municipality’s major festivals. São João de Santo Estêvão takes place around the square in June, with pre-São João celebrations beginning at the start of the month. The festival also includes a gathering of June folk groups from several municipalities in Bahia. During the June festivities, Boi Janeiro, a form of Bumba-meu-boi, is performed at Cruzeiro do Monte.
At its 31st edition, held on June 6, 2026, Arraiá da Modesto Gusmão was described as one of Santo Estêvão’s most traditional June festivals. Micareta is also considered one of the municipality’s most traditional festivals and part of its cultural identity. On August 27 and 28, 2026, the Agosto das Culturas Tradicionais e Populares program featured cultural performances, workshops, cinema, and a handicrafts fair. FLISE, the Festa Literária de Santo Estêvão, is also part of the festival calendar and is dedicated to literature and artistic and cultural expression.
The Igreja Matriz is the city’s main Catholic church and the venue for major religious events. These include the patron saint festival and procession, a Via-Sacra performance during Holy Week, and the harvest festival. The Centro Cultural Temístocles Pires de Cerqueira now houses the municipal museum, or city memorial. It hosts exhibitions on culture and art, talks, conferences, courses, and other cultural events.
Lagoons, Views, and Activities by the Water
Lagoa de Plínio is considered a tourist attraction and a landmark of Santo Estêvão, and offers nature-oriented leisure activities. Facilities there include a children’s playground and a running track. Lagoa de Santana is another point of reference: it is considered a landmark of Santo Estêvão and offers a range of sports and leisure activities. The two lagoons make for distinct places to visit, while the viewpoint at Cruzeiro do Monte looks in a different direction.
The viewpoint is in the higher part of the city. From there, you can see Riacho do Salgado, described as the place of Santo Estêvão’s origins. The Rio Paraguaçu runs by Porto Castro Alves, where the river is used for water sports, boat trips, and jet ski gatherings. This offers a different perspective on local leisure activities than the running track and viewpoint. Casa do Poeta at Porto Castro Alves has also been preserved.
Water sports also have a documented competition history here: in 2023, the Circuito do Campeonato Baiano de Canoagem Velocidade e Paracanoagem passed through Santo Estêvão. In 2025, Santo Estêvão hosted the 7th stage of the Campeonato Baiano de Águas Abertas for the first time. The competitions took place in Lake Pedra do Cavalo at Porto Castro Alves. These past events provide a time frame for sporting activities here, but they are not a current event calendar.
Local Markets and Getting There
Festa do Milho and Feira da Agricultura Familiar take place at Praça Sete de Setembro. The offerings include regional foods, products from family farms, handicrafts, musical performances, and Samba de Roda. The Centro de Abastecimento – Feira Livre is considered a traditional symbol of local and regional history and folk culture, and attracts visitors from several cities in Bahia. For anyone interested in local products and cultural events, this offers another reason to plan a stay around dates in town.
Santo Estêvão is located on BR 116. An ASCAVERSE van service authorized by AGERBA connects Praça da Matriz in Feira de Santana with Praça Sete de Setembro in central Santo Estêvão. If you are planning to use this connection to get there, check the current schedule in advance. When choosing a vacation rental, it helps to first decide what matters most to you: festival culture, cultural venues, leisure at the lagoons, or activities on the Rio Paraguaçu.
