Monte Gordo can be planned around three specific themes: the church of the São Bento parish, local festival events and the Mercado Municipal. It is worth distinguishing permanent features of the area from individual dated events. Your choice of accommodation can also depend on whether you are mainly interested in church and cultural history, the market, or a swimming spot available to camp guests.

Church and cultural identity

The church of the São Bento parish in Monte Gordo was rebuilt and fully restored within two years. São Bento is the patron saint of the Monte Gordo district. For visitors interested in culture, the building’s history and its patron saint are two specific points of interest.

Samba-Chula is also associated with Monte Gordo: a 2010 cultural entry identifies Samba Raízes do Passado as a Samba-Chula group based in the town. This adds an example of a local music style to the religious connections.

Festivals: dates and events

The São Bento celebrations documented for 2025 included a traditional procession on March 21 at 8:30 a.m., setting off from the Capela de São Francisco de Assis. If you are planning a future edition, check whether and when it will take place and what events are scheduled.

The 2025 Lavagem de Monte Gordo also covered three kilometres from Praça Central de Guarajuba towards the Capela de São Francisco de Assis, which is located in front of the Centro Comercial de Monte Gordo. That year’s event featured Beira de Rua, Capoeira Feminina Filhas do Vento, Samba Chula Raiz Ancestral, Charanga Big Band, Fanfarra Popular de Parafuso (Fanpop) and Grupo Contemporâneo de Parafuso. The route and participating groups may change for future editions; check the details for the relevant date.

Market, bus and accommodation connections

Monte Gordo’s Mercado Municipal is on Rodovia BA-529, at the corner of Rua do Matadouro. Following its reopening in 2024, the market included a food court, bars, restaurants, fishmongers and accessible restrooms. If you are planning to stop there for food or shopping, check which businesses and services are currently available before your visit.

Public bus route 0302, “Camaçari–Monte Gordo/Itaipu,” serves, among other places, Estrada Velha de Monte Gordo and Corujão. Routes and schedules may change; check the latest information before setting off.

Acampamento Mundo da Lua in Monte Gordo has a tributary of the Rio Pojuca where camp guests can swim. This swimming spot is for guests staying at the camp and is not a standalone public activity.
