Indiaroba brings together recognized festival culture and literary connections with boat trips, river landscapes, and rural destinations. For planning, it helps to consider the places by what they are known for: Pontal is associated, among other things, with literary and television history as well as boat traffic; in Terra Caída, trips on the Rio Piauí and connections with nature are part of the local character.

Boat Trips and River Landscapes

In Pontal, residents operate boat trips every day for both sightseeing and everyday transport to work. If you would like to plan a trip, check local availability before you travel. The large stone pier in Pontal accommodates boats of various sizes carrying people or cargo.

Praia de Pontal is a river beach with calm water on the Rio Real; there, the Rio Real forms the boundary between Sergipe and Bahia. Terra Caída offers a different view of the water: visitors can take boat trips on the Rio Piauí and enjoy the natural landscape. In Terra Caída, experienced boat operators run traditional trips; check local availability in advance.

Festivals, Literature and Architectural History

A municipal law dated March 8, 2024, recognizes the Festa dos Pescadores in Indiaroba as intangible cultural and historical heritage. The Cortejo de São Pedro takes place annually on the eve of Pentecost during the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo. The procession is accompanied by traditional samba de coco groups.

Pontal, along with Mangue Seco, a district of Jandaíra in northern Bahia, was the setting for Jorge Amado’s novel “Tieta do Agreste.” The telenovela “Tieta,” broadcast by Rede Globo and inspired by the novel, also used Pontal as a filming location.

The architectural history encompasses two distinct landmarks: the Igreja Matriz do Divino Espírito Santo, a 19th-century building, stands in the municipal seat of Indiaroba. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Povoado Convento was founded by Jesuits in 1750. In Povoado Terra Caída, the Monumento Aratu also pays tribute to local wildlife as a sculpture; it was unveiled in January 2024.

Nature and Rural Excursions

Trilha do Manguezal is a nature destination in Povoado Terra Caída. The mangrove forest of Terra Caída in Indiaroba is an ecological corridor and serves as a nursery for several marine species.

Visitors interested in agriculture can visit several orange groves in Sete Brejos and the Assentamento 5 de Janeiro. These visits offer a different focus from the boat trips: citrus cultivation and the rural surroundings.

Local Specialties

Sr. Pascásio’s empada is recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Sergipe. In Pontal, the Associação das Catadoras de Mangaba sells products made from fruits of the restinga, including sweets, liqueurs, chocolates, and jellies.
