A prominent landmark for visitors to Careiro is Praça dos Três Poderes: it is the political and administrative center, and is home to the Prefeitura, Câmara Municipal and Fórum. The square also hosts several cultural and seasonal events. When planning your visit, you can therefore use the town center or a specific festival date as your point of reference—two different ways to explore Careiro.
Festivals for different occasions
The Festa da Padroeira Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Careiro reached its 44th edition in 2025. It combined religious celebrations with an artistic and cultural program for local residents and visitors. The festival calendar also includes Carnacareiro, a local Carnival tradition. A 2025 calendar lists several Blocos, including Bloco dos Aspones, Banda do Galo, Bloco Altas Horas, Bloco Pirão do Bodó and Bloco Balada Certa.
The municipality’s anniversary is celebrated every year on December 19 at Praça dos Três Poderes, with cultural and musical performances as well as sporting activities. The Réveillon celebration is also held there every year, with musical performances and fireworks. For Acender das Luzes Natalinas, a 2025 calendar lists musical performances, choirs, a Christmas parade and Santa Claus’s arrival in the square. Programs may change. If a particular festival is the reason for your trip, check the latest date and program in advance.
The square, church and getting your bearings in the center
Praça dos Três Poderes can also be explored as a town landmark independently of any event: visitors can explore the surrounding area and take in the architecture. Igreja Nossa Senhora de Fátima is in central Careiro, on Rua Mamori opposite the square. At the church, you can admire the architecture, attend religious ceremonies or spend a moment in contemplation. If you plan to attend a ceremony, check its date in advance.
Careiro’s main urban settlement is located at kilometer 102 of BR-319. This provides a geographical reference point for the urban center; it does not describe current traffic conditions. When planning a trip, it is also important to distinguish between the town center and destinations elsewhere in the municipality.
Riverfront and local products
Careiro’s river beaches are on the banks of the Rio Castanho and are considered places for sunbathing, picnics and water sports. Seasonal water conditions may affect their use, so take the current situation into account when planning. Alongside the festivals and town center, they offer a different focus for your stay: time by the river rather than a visit to a landmark or event.
The town center is also home to Mercado Municipal José Batista de Mendonça. It has stalls selling local products, handicrafts and regional specialties. For travelers interested in these products and crafts, the market is another clearly identified place in the center. The mix of stalls and operating conditions may change.
Careiro and the municipality
An official Amazonastur tourism list includes both Lago do Mamori and Porto de Araçá among the main tourist attractions in the municipality of Careiro Castanho. This classification differs from the description of the town center: it refers to the municipality, not the urban core. This makes it possible to distinguish between destinations in central Careiro and tourist attractions elsewhere in the municipality when choosing where to go.
