The Rio Araguari runs along the edge of the city of Ferreira Gomes and is about 617 kilometers long. The city waterfront, Carnaguari, held outside the regular carnival season, and waterfall destinations within the municipality offer different ways to shape your trip. When looking for a vacation rental, it is worth distinguishing between the city and the municipality: the Orla is in the city; Cachoeira do Traíra and Cachoeira do Pium are destinations in the municipality.

Riverfront and City Access

The Orla da Cidade de Ferreira Gomes is an approximately 1.5-kilometer-long waterfront promenade along the Rio Araguari. A field study published in the 2010s described it as a particularly attractive landscape for the recreation of residents and tourists. Waterfront facilities and conditions may have changed; before visiting, check what is currently in place locally.

The city's location on the river is also important for getting oriented: the main routes into Ferreira Gomes are by river and via the BR-156.

Carnaguari and Culture

Carnaguari is a carnival festival in Ferreira Gomes held outside the regular carnival season. The 2025 edition took place on August 2 and 3. The government of the state of Amapá described the festival as traditional and highlighted its importance to the municipality's economy and culture. If you plan your trip around the festival, check the date of the edition you intend to attend.

Swimming Spots on the Araguari

A 2023 travel report mentions two or three spots along the Ferreira Gomes riverfront where people swim in the Rio Araguari. The number of swimming spots may change. Water levels and current strength may also be affected by the Coaracy Nunes hydroelectric plant. Caution is therefore advised when swimming away from the riverbank.

The Ferreira Gomes Hydroelectric Plant is also listed among the city's tourist attractions. This identifies the riverfront and promenade as an urban focus; the waterfalls are additional destinations within the municipality.

Waterfall Destinations in the Municipality

The privately owned Cachoeira do Traíra has a balneário facility and food service. A private facility is also listed at Cachoeira do Pium, where there is no balneário infrastructure. An entrance fee of 20 reais per vehicle is indicated for both places. As fees and operating conditions may change, confirm them before your visit.

Both waterfalls are accessible by car, but the routes described differ. To reach Cachoeira do Traíra, after crossing the bridge over the Rio Araguari, continue for about 5 kilometers to the turnoff, then travel another 5 kilometers along the access road. A sign reading “Balneário do Traíra” stands at the entrance. For Cachoeira do Pium, the access road runs another 6 kilometers from the entrance marked with a “Mineração Buriti” sign to the waterfall. These details provide specific waypoints for the two routes without specifying travel times or road conditions.

Landscape and Finding Accommodation

The municipality includes two sustainable-use conservation areas: the Floresta Nacional do Amapá (FLONA) and the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Seringal Triunfo. The regional context thus encompasses designated conservation areas as well as the river and waterfalls; this does not imply that visits are possible or that trails are accessible.

When choosing a vacation rental, you can first decide whether the urban Orla, Carnaguari, or the waterfall destinations in the municipality will shape your stay. Consider the property's exact location and the routes relevant to you.
