Tarija combines a lively festival calendar with viewpoints and experiences centered on wine and singani. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the city of Tarija and other destinations in the department: that way, you can decide whether your stay will focus mainly on the city or also on the wider region.
Festivals, History and Views in Tarija
The Fiesta Grande de Tarija in honor of San Roque takes place every year from August 15 to the second Tuesday in September. The festival brings together faith, music, dance and tradition through religious processions, music festivals, competitions and fireworks. During the processions, the Chunchos wear turbans decorated with feathers and mirrors, colorful ponchillos and carry arrows. They dance as they fulfill their vows. If you want to plan your trip around the celebrations, check the dates for your chosen year.
The Museo San Roque is housed in a parish house built in 1908 after the Carmelite monks arrived in Tarija. The museum’s location is therefore linked to a specific chapter in the city’s religious history. The Lazareto, near Tarija, is also visited during the festivities honoring San Roque: visitors include Chunchos fulfilling their vows and Cañeros.
The viewpoints also offer different landmarks. From the Mirador Corazón de Jesús, you can see the Mirador de los Sueños, where the large Copa de Vino is located. La Vinoteca offers the public tastings of wines and singanis from the Tarija Valley. Views and tastings are two distinct aspects of a stay: taking in the sights of named places and having the opportunity to discover regional drinks.
Other Destinations in the Department of Tarija
Across the wider Department of Tarija, wine experiences extend beyond the city. On the Ruta del Singani Artesanal y los Molinos de Piedra, visitors can learn how artisanal singani is made at Bodega Artesanal El Galeán and take part in a guided tasting. Availability may vary depending on the season and organized tour. In Valle de la Concepción, 25 kilometers from the city of Tarija, La Casa Vieja offers wine tastings in an artisanal winery; check current visitor arrangements before your visit.
Valle de la Concepción is one of the main tourist attractions in the Department of Tarija. It is an important wine-growing area, with the largest vineyard area in the department and some of Bolivia’s most important wineries. This gives you a sense of the region’s connection to wine through both tastings and the importance of its growing area.
For nature lovers, the Reserva BiolĂłgica de la Cordillera de Sama offers a different landscape, characterized by steep slopes, high plateaus and high-Andean lagoons. At Laguna Pujzara Tajzara, visitors can watch birds and walk along the shore. The Reserva Nacional de Flora y Fauna TariquĂa is characterized by mountainous terrain and mostly well-preserved forests. Visitors can camp in Sidras and hike in the reserve; check access arrangements locally before your visit.
Another recurring event in the department is the pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chaguaya in honor of the Virgen de Chaguaya. It takes place every year between August 15 and September 14. The Fiesta Grande and the pilgrimage are separate events with their own celebration periods; if you are planning a trip specifically around the pilgrimage, confirm the current dates and arrangements.
