The Estación Biológica Abuná

The Estación Biológica Abuná is located in Abuná Province, in the Department of Pando and the municipality of Ingavi. The area stated in the departmental regulation is 3,520.0766 hectares. The station was declared natural heritage of the Department of Pando; the declaration also provides for its promotion and preservation. Its geographical location, stated area and preservation mandate are therefore clearly defined.

The stated purposes include model projects for the use and management of the Amazon forest, as well as its integrated management. Ecotourism is also mentioned, along with other activities, provided they are compatible with its status as natural heritage. This condition is part of the designation’s purpose: the activities mentioned must be consistent with its protected status. Ecotourism is described as an intended purpose, not as a promise of a specific visitor programme. For choosing a trip, this points to a nature-focused experience that brings together the forest, preservation and different forms of management.

Pando: Research, Monuments and History

In the wider destination of Pando, camera-trap campaigns in the Área Modelo de Manejo Integral del Bosque de Santa Rosa del Abuná offer a clearly bounded glimpse into research. The campaigns took place from 2017 to 2019, documenting 30 mammal species and 8 bird species. The results were reported in 2023. The years therefore refer to different things: 2017 to 2019 is the survey period, while 2023 is the year the results were reported.

The cultural history of the wider destination of Pando is also rooted in specific places. In Cobija, the Monumento El Carretón is located at Parque Piñata on Avenida 9 de febrero. The three-headed Monumento a los Héroes de la Batalla de Bahía stands at the same park on the same avenue. Sculptor David Paz created it to commemorate the Battle of Bahía.

Parque Piñata was inaugurated in December 2008 and developed as a recreation and leisure area for the public. The site was previously the runway of the old airport. These details tell the story of the park’s creation and the site’s former use.

Another monument in Cobija is the Monumento El Cristo. Sculptor David Paz Ramos created it on 24 June 1995, when Aníbal Arab Fadul was mayor. Barrio Junín adds an entire neighbourhood: it is considered the oldest neighbourhood in the Municipality of Cobija and was declared Bolivia’s Historical Cultural Heritage by a national law in 2014. Thus, Pando’s cultural context extends from individual monuments to the history of a historic neighbourhood.

Putting the Trip’s Themes in Context

For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between two levels: in Abuna, the Estación Biológica is the specific point of reference, with its natural heritage status and its stated purposes related to the forest and ecotourism. The camera-trap results and the cultural sites mentioned, by contrast, are examples from the wider destination of Pando, including places in Cobija. This distinction can help you decide what you want to focus on: natural heritage and forest management, or research history, monuments and historic urban heritage. If you’re looking for a holiday rental for your trip, you can first decide which of these themes you want to guide your choice of destination.
