In Coroico itself, the Church of San Pedro y San Pablo is a specific religious landmark: it houses the Virgen de la Candelaria, patron saint of the residents of Coroico. Other cultural and coffee-related topics are found on different scales—in Tocaña and in the Municipality of Coroico, respectively. If you are looking for accommodation in Coroico, this distinction helps separate local references from broader destinations.

Culture in Coroico and Tocaña

The Centro Cultural Tocaña is located in Tocaña, a little over 45 minutes from Coroico. Founded in 2003, the interpretation center preserves Afro-Bolivian culture. It displays Saya objects, musical instruments, work tools, and audiovisual archives, and can accommodate about 200 people. This means there are two distinct cultural points of interest in the area: the patron saint of Coroico’s residents and the Afro-Bolivian culture explored by the center in Tocaña.

The difference between the locations also matters when planning your trip. The church is in Coroico; Tocaña is a separate destination, a little over 45 minutes away. Factor in this travel time when deciding which topics you would like to combine during your stay.

Coffee tours in the Municipality of Coroico

A report dated February 22, 2024, described three coffee tours at Finca Shanti in the Municipality of Coroico: Espresso, Capuccino, and Lungo. The one-hour Espresso tour went around the farm and coffee fields, covering the harvest and ripe coffee cherries.

On the Capuccino tour, visitors could harvest and peel coffee, roast it, and take part in a coffee tasting. The five-hour Lungo tour included the two shorter tours and also covered coffee fermentation and washing, the production of Sultana, and drying in covered structures. In terms of duration, the one-hour Espresso tour contrasts with the five-hour Lungo option; the Capuccino tour focused on hands-on participation in the various steps. If you are planning to take one of these tours, check in advance whether it is currently offered.

In the wider destination of La Paz

The Cotapata National Park and Integrated Natural Area for Management is also located in the Department of La Paz. By road, the protected area can be reached via the La Paz–Coroico highway or through the Río Huarinilla valley; a private vehicle is recommended for the road journey. By bus, you can travel as far as Coroico or La Cumbre. From there, a trekking route continues to the village of El Chairo. The pre-Columbian El Choro trail can also be used to access the protected area on foot. Check current trail conditions and access options before setting out on a hike.

Cotapata’s ecological, scenic, and archaeological features make it suitable for environmental education and tourism. Also in the Department of La Paz, the Chairo–Socosani trail continues from Puente Inca en Chairo along the lower slope of Cerro Nogalani to the ruins of Socosani. Along the way, you can see old agricultural terraces, retaining walls, and paved paths. This route adds archaeological sites to the regional picture, while the routes to Cotapata describe different road and pedestrian access options to the protected area.
