On Plaza 25 de Mayo stands the Parroquia Virgen del Rosario, considered a symbol of faith and tradition in southern Bolivia. Every October, Villa Abecia celebrates a festival in honor of the Virgen del Rosario.

Festival Calendar and Carnaval

A program for the “Carnaval de tus Sueños” in Villa Abecia was reported in February 2026. It included, among other events, the Corso Infantil, competitions for Copleros and Erqueros, the Entrada de Taripacos, the Corso Comparsero, the Fiesta de la Cueca and the Ojoteada, as well as Ch’alla and Chamulladas on Tuesday. A Vendimia was scheduled for Sunday. This program is specifically associated with 2026; by contrast, the October festival is described as an event celebrated annually.

Wine and Local Specialties

Near Villa Abecia, Bodega La Caldera offers an approximately two-hour wine tour with a tasting and explanations about the estate’s history and artisanal production process. Visits must be confirmed 24 hours in advance; confirm your participation accordingly before traveling. In town, the Cañón Colorado winery and vineyard, owned by the Ríos family, are about 100 steps west of the central plaza. The artisanal fig spirit “500” is drunk in Villa Abecia with lemon and salt.

Las Pozas on the RĂo Villa Abecia

About two kilometers from Villa Abecia lie Las Pozas, a group of natural swimming pools with clear, cool water. Along a four-kilometer route are 20 pools of different designs, including some with short and medium-sized waterfalls. They can be reached by following the course of the RĂo Villa Abecia. The two distance measurements describe different things: Las Pozas is about two kilometers from town, while four kilometers refers to the route with the pools along the river. The natural route and the number of pools may change depending on river conditions; check conditions before visiting.

Getting There and the Wider Travel Region

Travel information gives the journey to Villa Abecia as approximately two and a half hours from Tarija and PotosĂ, and around five hours from Sucre. Several public transport companies run from the bus terminals to the entrance of the Municipio. Times and connections may change; check current services before traveling.

Chuquisaca in the Wider Travel Region

Sucre, Bolivia’s first capital, was founded by the Spanish in the first half of the 16th century. Its well-preserved religious buildings from the 16th century, including San Lázaro, San Francisco, and Santo Domingo, illustrate the blending of local architectural traditions with styles introduced from Europe.

The Ruta del Vino y del Singani de Altura also encompasses inter-Andean valleys in Tarija, in the Cintis region of Chuquisaca, and in Potosí, including the valleys of Cotagaita and Vitichi. Its tourism offering is based primarily on growing grapes and processing them into derived products. This broader regional context complements Villa Abecia’s local wine connections with a look at Chuquisaca’s wine-growing regions.
