Altun Ha: Maya history nearby

Near Rock Stone Pond lies Altun Ha, an important Maya ceremonial center. Altun Ha was also an important link in coastal trade routes. This brings two historical roles together in one place: ceremonial significance and a connection to trade along the coast.

The Temple of the Masonry Altars is approximately 53 feet tall. Kinich Ahau was discovered and excavated in a tomb in this temple. Kinich Ahau is the Yucatec Maya name for the Maya sun god depicted on the jade carving. The object is also known as “The Jade Head,” weighs 10 pounds, and is 6 inches tall. It is the largest carved jade object found in Mesoamerica. The connection leads from the structure to the individual artifact: the temple is where it was found, while the name and depiction identify the jade carving. The height and dimensions also make clear the difference between the structure and the small artifact.

Birdwatching in Belize

Another highlight in Belize is the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary. The dry season, from November to May, is considered the peak season for birdwatching there. According to the tour description, visitors are likely to see 20 to 40 different bird species on tours lasting one to three hours at any time of year. The possible number of species is not a guarantee for any particular tour. The seasonal information and tour length answer different planning questions: November to May is the peak season, while one to three hours is the stated duration of the tours.

Visitors can rent canoes, bicycles, and horses at the Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary to explore the area for birdwatching. Check the current availability of these rentals before your trip. Free trail maps are available at the visitor center; ask locally whether they are currently available. This sanctuary offers several ways to explore, all connected with birdwatching.

More nature and cultural topics in Belize

At Swallow Caye, visitors can observe manatees from their boats in their natural habitat. Follow the sanctuary’s guidelines. More than 45 animal species can be seen at the Belize Zoo; the number may change. The zoo was founded in 1983. Zookeepers take visitors to see some of the animals. Check the current availability of these tours before making plans. Observing manatees from a boat and taking a tour to see animals at the zoo offer different nature experiences.

Cultural destinations in Belize also have their own appeal. Beyond the Maya temples, St. John’s Cathedral is considered the oldest Anglican church in Central America. The Travellers Heritage Center Museum is located in Belize City and is described as suitable for day trips or for cruise visitors passing through. Check the museum’s current operating status before visiting.
