Southwest of the centre of Sterrebeek lies Kasteel Ter Meeren, whose park covers more than eight hectares. Het Zeen is an eight-hectare nature area in the town. For planning your trip, these similarly sized areas cater to different interests: parkland and historic architecture on the one hand, nature and a variety of activities on the other.

Kasteel Ter Meeren: Park and Building History

The Ter Meeren park features a cast-iron arched bridge over a pond. This detail adds a distinctive structure to the expansive parkland. Those interested in cultural heritage will also find an architectural landmark in the donjon: Kasteel Ter Meeren includes a donjon that is thought to date from the 14th century. The cautious dating is important: it places the tower in a historical period without claiming an exact year of construction.

The site can therefore be appreciated in more than just terms of size: the park provides the landscape setting, while the bridge and donjon are specific architectural features. For planning your trip, this offers a different focus from a stay centred mainly on exploring the nature area or following walking routes.

Het Zeen: Nature and Activities

At the Het Zeen nature area, you can walk, play, cycle and relax. Play mounds and a complex of willow huts with tunnels and shelters add more opportunities for play. This allows for several kinds of activities: getting around on foot or by bike, playing and taking a break.

You can also enjoy a view of the wider winter riverbed of the Kleine Maalbeek from the 292-metre-long footbridge. This specific viewpoint complements the activities in the area with an opportunity to observe the landscape. When planning an outing, you can therefore choose between exercise, play and enjoying a view of the riverbed.

Choose Walks by Distance and Starting Point

The listed distances and starting points are the most useful details for comparing the walks. The Akkervogelwandeling starts on Zeenstraat in Sterrebeek and is 10.6 kilometres long. At six kilometres, the Willem Van Oranjepad is shorter; it starts at Kerkdries.

The Stertbeca Wandeling also starts at Kerkdries and is eight kilometres long. Unlike the routes mentioned above, it is not signposted. The Meester Craps wandeling is 8.2 kilometres long and starts at Sint-Pancratiuskerk. The two walks that start at Kerkdries therefore offer a choice between six and eight kilometres, while the Meester Craps wandeling offers a similar distance from a different stated starting point.

The Kraainem- en Wezembeekwandeling passes through the Zeenbos in Sterrebeek. Among the routes with a stated distance, the range is clearly from six to 10.6 kilometres. For the Stertbeca Wandeling, you should also bear in mind that it is not signposted. As route details may change, check the information before setting out.
