In Beersel, a variety of discoveries offer different themes: Lambic breweries and Geuze, a medieval moated castle, and traces of paper and cardboard production. You can focus on tastings, architecture or crafts. The ways to visit also differ: as well as brewery tours, there are scheduled public tours and walking routes that cater to specific interests.

Lambic Breweries and Tastings

Oud Beersel is an authentic, independent Lambic brewery that began operating in 1882. Guided brewery tours are organised for individuals and groups. A tour lasts 45 minutes to an hour, followed by a tasting at the Bierhuis. There, snacks and a selection of hot dishes made with the brewery’s own beers are served.

3 Fonteinen also represents a long brewing tradition: the traditional Lambic brewery and Geuze blender traces its history back to 1887. For more than three generations, it has been making Oude Geuze and Oude Kriek by traditional methods. Public tours at the Lambik-O-droom in Lot, Beersel, take place every Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. and every Sunday at 2 p.m. Individuals and small groups can join without a reservation.

Another place to visit is the Biercentrum De Lambiek. You can visit independently or with an expert guide; guided tours end with a tasting. Unlike the public tours at the Lambik-O-droom, which do not require a reservation, group visits to the Biercentrum can be booked using an online form, by emailing visit@beersel.be or by calling 02 359 16 36. Check the latest visitor information on tours, times and reservations before travelling.

Moated Castle and Craft History

Kasteel van Beersel is a unique moated castle and one of the best-preserved examples of medieval military architecture in Belgium. From its towers, there are panoramic views across the Pajottenland and the Zennevallei. The castle offers a different way to explore Beersel’s history than the breweries do: here, the experience is shaped by defensive architecture and views across the two named regions.

The historic Papiermolen Herisem site and former Winderickx cardboard factory comprise the original paper mill, the cardboard factory, a farm with a grain mill and a residence. During the Stoomdagen, held twice a year, the steam engine at Papiermolen Herisem is brought back into operation. The site thus brings together several stages of paper and cardboard production with agricultural and technical elements.

Walking Routes and Getting There

The Kesterbeekwandeling combines nature, cultural heritage and authentic crafts. It starts at Herman Teirlinckplein in 1650 Beersel. The Beersel Geproefd Wandelpad continues on to Oud Beersel, where you can tour the brewery or sample old Geuze, old Kriek and various Lambic beers at the Bierhuis. The routes have different focuses: the information about the Kesterbeekwandeling describes its themes and starting point, while the Beersel Geproefd Wandelpad specifically leads to the brewery and its tasting options.

To get to the Oud Beersel brewery, take De Lijn bus route R54 to the “Oud Beersel” stop right by the brewery. You can reach it from Halle station or the Ukkel Kalevoet stop. Check the route with the transport operator before setting off. When choosing what to visit, you can combine brewery culture with a walk or focus on the castle and craft history, while keeping in mind the different visitor options and their respective conditions.
