The Mogilev Region offers a wide range of discoveries. At the Slavgorod Blue Spring site, the “Bird Corner” ecological trail has 14 stations; in Bykhov, a castle with a palace and fortifications shapes the architectural landscape. The Mstislavl Historical-Archaeological Museum displays objects from the early 13th and 15th centuries. Nature, architectural history and individual collection pieces offer different ways to discover the region according to your interests.

Nature and Regional Orientation

The “Bird Corner” ecological trail at the Slavgorod Blue Spring site has 14 stations. Its name and ecological focus give it a clear thematic framework; the stations divide the trail into individual stages. This is a specific point of interest for those interested in nature education.

The Dnieper is the largest river in Bykhov District and a geographic reference point for understanding the district. The Chigirinka recreation project brings together tourism stakeholders. They are located near the Chigirinskoye Reservoir, in the territories of Bykhov and Kirov districts. Chigirinka is promoted as a recreation area of national significance.

Architecture and Historical Evidence

Bykhov Castle comprised a fortified palace and three faceted towers. Faceted towers are divided into several clearly defined surfaces; the term gives a vivid sense of their shape. The complex also included an 800-metre-long rampart with bastions, a water-filled moat and a fortress wall to the north. The rampart’s length provides a concrete sense of scale; the moat, bastions and wall represent different elements of fortification architecture. The palace and defensive features thus emerge as different aspects of the same complex.

The Mstislavl Historical-Archaeological Museum displays a 15th-century saddle helmet, described as unique in Belarus and even in Western Europe. It also exhibits one of the three birch-bark letters found in Belarus, dating from the early 13th century, as well as an ancient writing stylus. The helmet and the letter differ both as objects and in their dates: the helmet dates to the 15th century, while the letter dates to the early 13th century. The written find draws attention to a specific written record, while the helmet offers a different material perspective on the past.

The Pustynki Monastery is also located in Mstislavl District. The “Road to the Shrine” tourist route, described in 2022, includes a visit to the monastery. Check whether the route is currently available before travelling.

Zhilichi offers a different architectural focus: its main attraction is a palace-and-park ensemble from the first half of the 19th century. Compared with Bykhov Castle, the focus shifts from ramparts, moat and towers to the connection between palace and park.

The “Buynichskoe Field” memorial complex near Buinichi in Mogilev District is associated with the fierce fighting near Buinichi during the defence of Mogilev in 1941. It shifts the focus from architectural and collection history to a specific episode in the region’s wartime history.
