Minsk has many different sides: historic streets and houses define the character of Trinity Suburb, museums explore the history of the country and the city, and both the old quarter and Victory Park lie along the Svislach River. The zoo offers a different focus, with animal exhibits and a dinosaur park. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether cultural history, wildlife or a stay by the river is most important to you.

Discover Historic Streets and Buildings

A walk of around 500 metres, taking about an hour, links Zybickaya Street and Herzen Street. It begins near Nemiga metro station, continues to the end of Zybickaya Street, returns via Herzen Street and then carries on towards Freedom Square. Sights along the way include a 17th-century monastery wall, trading rows and merchants’ houses. The Carriage Museum is also part of the route: it is housed in a wing of the 17th-century Bernardine Monastery. A wing of the Bernardine Nuns’ Monastery, dating from the 1730s, adds another historic stop. The different buildings and periods make this walk a practical way to get to know Minsk on foot through its architecture.

Trinity Suburb is an old quarter on the banks of the Svislach River in central Minsk. Its charming streets and houses with tiled roofs in delicate shades have become a kind of symbol of the city. Here, the streetscape takes centre stage; museums offer a different perspective. If you want to experience Minsk not only through collections but also through the character of a neighbourhood, Trinity Suburb offers a distinctive way to explore the city’s history.

Museums: National History and the Changing City

The National Historical Museum of the Republic of Belarus is the country’s largest repository of its tangible and intangible cultural heritage, with more than 400,000 exhibits. Its collections range from archaeological finds and Slutsk belts to ancient documents, weapons and treasures. This breadth offers a different perspective on Minsk than a walk through a historic quarter: rather than streets and houses, the focus here is on the heritage of the country as a whole.

The Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War preserves, researches and presents documentary and material evidence of the heroism and sacrifices of the Belarusian people during the war. It complements the broader collection of the National Historical Museum with a clearly defined historical focus.

Minsk City Hall was restored between 2002 and 2004 at the site and in the form remembered by the city in the mid-19th century. It has been open to the public since 2012, while continuing to serve administrative functions. Two long-term exhibition projects are titled “Minsk in the historical space. Cartographic cabinet” and “Minsk among friends. Twin cities of the capital of Belarus”. They connect a visit to City Hall with cartographic themes and the capital’s twin cities. As current access arrangements and the exhibition programme may change, check them before your visit.

Wildlife and Exhibitions at Minsk Zoo

Minsk Zoo offers a different focus from the history museums. Its collection includes exotic animals and rare representatives of Belarusian wildlife; in total, there are more than 2,000 animal specimens from around 400 species. It is complemented by the exhibitions “The Wonderful world of the terrarium” and “Aquarium”. The zoo therefore focuses both on animals and on the different ways they are presented.

Other attractions include a petting area where visitors can stroke domestic goats, sheep and pigs. The dinosaur park is an outdoor themed play area with 35 life-size dinosaur figures, most of which are animated. The collection, exhibitions, animal encounters and dinosaur park each offer something different. Animal numbers, displays and activities may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

Svislach Riverbanks: Distinguishing the Quarter from the Park

Victory Park is also located on the banks of the Svislach River and has well-maintained beaches. The two riverside locations have different focuses: Trinity Suburb is known for its old streets and houses, while Victory Park is centred on its parkland and beaches. Beach conditions may change seasonally; check the current situation before your visit. This helps you decide whether you are more interested in historic architecture or spending time in a park.

These differences help you plan your trip around your own interests: a walk through an old quarter, collections on national and city history, wildlife or Victory Park by the river. That way, you can choose accommodation based on the places and activities that matter most during your stay in Minsk.
