If you are considering Loyew for a cultural stay, there are two distinct ways to explore the town: its remembrance of the Second World War and the geology of the Dnieper. The “Museum of the Battle for the Dnieper” presents local and regional wartime history; the “Loyev” geological outcrop takes you much further back into the history of the Earth. Together, these subjects give your trip a clear focus without requiring you to view Loyew in the same way.
Remembrance of the Second World War
The “Museum of the Battle for the Dnieper” opened in Loyew on 9 May 1985 as a branch of the “Belarusian State Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War.” It is a memorial to all participants in the Second World War, not only to the soldiers who fought on the Dnieper. The exhibition includes materials about the partisan movement in Loyevshchina and local residents from the region who took part in the Second World War. The historical perspective also extends to the Loyev bridgehead: the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi occupiers began there in 1943.
The “Inside the Front Line” project is presented as part of the temporary exhibition “Partisans. Episodes” and grew out of the museum’s fieldwork from 2019 to 2021. It focuses on the memories of children who experienced the war in Loyev and on civilian life during the war. The town’s history thus encompasses not only military events, but also children’s experiences and civilian life.
Geology on the right bank of the Dnieper
The “Loyev” Geological Outcrop is a geological natural monument of national significance. It lies on the steep slope of the Dnieper’s right bank and exposes ancient lake and swamp deposits. The geological section of the Loyev escarpment in the Loyev-Don Basin formed between 135,000 and 110,000 years ago. The geological site therefore brings together a specific landform, exposed deposits, and a defined period in the history of the Earth. For planning your trip, this offers a different perspective from the museum’s historical themes; both can be seen as distinct ways of exploring Loyew.
Cultural traditions and projects
Loyew’s cultural heritage is not limited to the war years. The “Nasledniki Loya” museum association is dedicated to researching the history of Loyevshchina and preserving historical and cultural traditions. The “Loyev Batleyka” is associated with an interlude from the traditional Belarusian puppet theatre repertoire, which was performed at fairs and public celebrations. This interlude has no musical accompaniment and includes a fragment of Belarusian spiritual verse. As part of the “Loyev in Color” project, old black-and-white photographs from the museum’s collection were colorized. These examples illustrate different forms: a performance tradition passed down over time and a project based on photographs from the museum’s collection.
Loyew in its regional context
