A landmark in St Lucy is Harrison Point Lighthouse: it is one of the four lighthouses still standing in Barbados and stands 85 feet tall. The landscape of the region tells of quite different forces. Along the coast, you’ll encounter rock formations created by the persistent action of waves on coral limestone; in the local landscape stands a church with a long history of rebuilding.

A landscape of distinctive rock formations

At Little Bay, blowholes are among the rock formations on the cliffs. The persistent force of strong waves created them in the coral limestone. This distinctive feature of the landscape shows how waves act on rock over a long period of time. Pico Teneriffe offers a different highlight: this pointed rock formation lies on the eastern side of St Lucy.

Archers Bay offers white sand and impressive views of rock and coral formations that evoke former landmasses. A man-made staircase leads down to the beach. If you plan to visit the bay, check the condition of the stairs on site. The difference between these coastal features lies not only in their appearance: at Little Bay, the blowholes and their formation in the coral limestone define the scenery, while Archers Bay is known for its sand, views and formations reminiscent of former landmasses.

Church architecture and history

The present-day Georgian St Lucy Parish Church was built in 1837. Over the course of the church’s history, it was rebuilt four times following a series of natural disasters. The construction date of the present-day church and the rebuilds belong to different chapters of its history: one refers to the current Georgian building, while the number of rebuilds reflects the longer history of the church building.

Practical information

There is a restaurant at Animal Flower Cave. If you plan to visit, check its current opening hours in advance. There are no toilets or changing facilities at Little Bay; if these facilities are important for your visit, check the information in advance.

Barbados in a wider context

Beyond St Lucy, Barbados also offers a range of historical and botanical attractions. Historic Bridgetown is a well-preserved old town dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, as well as an outstanding example of British colonial architecture. Bridgetown and its Garrison are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

On Barbados, Andromeda Botanic Gardens lies between the parishes of St. Joseph and St. John, about 300 yards from the Atlantic coast on the island’s eastern side. The six-acre site is home to more than 500 different plant species. The garden was established both as an ornamental garden and as a botanical garden for research. Its size, diversity of plants and two original purposes each offer a different perspective on the garden.

Hunte’s Gardens is located on the site of a former sugar plantation. This historical connection adds another perspective on the former use of the land to the botanical themes of Barbados.
