Folkestone combines first-hand insights into marine conservation with a history dating back to former plantation lands. A protected snorkelling area and a reef off the coast give the area its own distinctive features. St James also offers historical and cultural points of interest, including St. James Parish Church and the annual Holetown Festival.

Marine Conservation and Coastal Landscape

The Folkestone Marine Reserve extends for 2.1 km from a point north of the Coral Reef Club Hotel to the southern boundary of the Sandy Lane Hotel property. It is 650 to 950 metres wide from the shore. This expanse makes the reserve a prominent geographical focus for anyone interested in the coastal landscape.

The Folkestone Marine Reserve was established in St James in 1981. It is Barbados’ first and, to date, only legally designated marine reserve. This also gives the coastal area national significance: it is not just a local natural setting, but a specially designated protected area in Barbados.

Off the coast near Folkestone is a reef that formed after the Greek ship Stavronikita sank in 1976. Thus, alongside marine conservation, the story of the ship is also part of the area’s maritime character. The reference to the wreck adds a different dimension to the reserve’s boundaries: here, the focus is on a reef formed in the wake of a specific historical event.

Snorkelling and Visitor Facilities

Folkestone Marine Park has a protected area for snorkelling. In the St James destination, it is located in the calm waters of the west coast. The park also has equipment rental, an information centre about marine life and a museum. If you plan to use these visitor facilities, check their availability before your trip.

Folkstone Park, operated by the National Conservation Commission, has a visitor centre, snorkelling equipment rental, a gift shop, picnic tables, a children’s playground, tennis and basketball courts, toilets, changing facilities and parking. Check before your trip whether the listed facilities are available. Alongside its marine focus, these amenities also make the park practical for visitors.

History and Culture in St James

The area now occupied by Folkestone originally formed part of the Porter’s Plantation lands. The plantation belonged to the Alleyne family for several generations. The history of the place is therefore also connected to the family’s former land ownership.

In St James, St. James Parish Church commemorates the first English settlers to arrive in Barbados. Its present-day architecture also includes later additions: the sanctuary and north porch were added in the 20th century. The church thus combines its historical significance with architectural changes from a much later period.

The Holetown Festival takes place annually in Holetown in mid-February and lasts for one week. It commemorates the arrival of the first settlers on 17 February 1627. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with this cultural event, check the specific event dates.

For orientation in Holetown: 1st and 2nd Streets run parallel to each other, with restaurants and bars between them. This gives the town a different character from Folkestone, whose attractions focus on marine conservation and the coastal landscape. The location in Holetown and the streets’ layout help situate these cultural and dining options within St James.

Two Distinct Travel Highlights

The marine and cultural themes offer different points of reference for planning a trip. The Folkestone Marine Reserve and the reef provide a nature- and history-related connection to the area; the Holetown Festival offers an annual event in mid-February. If you are interested in the festival, plan around its specific dates. For a visit focused on marine conservation, you can instead use the reserve’s features described here and the visitor facilities at Folkestone Marine Park as a guide.
