Moulvibazar District offers a wide variety of highlights: forests in Lawachara National Park, waterfalls at Madhabkunda and Hum Hum, wetlands, and places of religious and historical significance. When choosing accommodation, the first consideration is which visits will shape your trip. Madhabkunda is in Barlekha; Madhabpur Lake, Hum Hum and Monipuri Village are in Kamalganj, while the shrine of Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa is in Moulvibazar Sadar.

Forests, Waterfalls and Wetlands

Lawachara National Park is a 1,250-hectare national park with tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest. Hum Hum Waterfall lies deep in the Rajkandi Reserved Forest, in the Kurma Forest Beat of Kamalganj. An approximately eight-kilometre hilly trail leads from Kalabanpara in Kurma Tea Garden to the natural waterfall. For Hum Hum, planning therefore needs to take into account both its forest location and the trail itself.

Madhabkunda Waterfall in Barlekha is Bangladesh’s largest waterfall, cascading down a hill almost 200 feet high. The descriptions of the two waterfall destinations emphasise different things: for Hum Hum, the trail’s length and terrain are described; for Madhabkunda, the approximate height of the waterfall is given. Madhabpur Lake offers a different kind of waterscape: it is an artificial reservoir in the Patra Khola area of Madhabpur Union in Kamalganj Upazila.

The wetlands also each have their own point of reference. Hakaluki Haor is Bangladesh’s largest haor. Baikka Beel is a wetland on the eastern side of Hail Haor in Sreemangal. Hakaluki can thus be identified by its national scale, while Baikka Beel is defined by its location on Hail Haor. This distinction helps you choose nature destinations according to the type of landscape you want.

Cultural Sites and Annual Festivals

The Bir Shrestho Hamidur Rahman Memorial is located in Dhalai Tea Garden in Kamalganj and commemorates the Liberation War. The shrine of Hazrat Syed Shah Mustafa is in Moulvibazar Sadar. An Urs Sharif is held there every year on the saint’s death anniversary. If this festival is the reason for your visit, check the specific date before travelling.

Monipuri Village in Adamapur Union, Kamalganj, developed around the Manipuri community’s clothing trade. The Ras Mela is held there every year at the beginning of the Bengali month of Agrahayan. At the pond beside Madhabkunda Waterfall, a Baruni bathing festival and fair are held on the Hindu tithi Madhukrishna Trayodashi in the month of Chaitra. As these festivals are scheduled according to calendar designations, it is a good idea to check the specific event dates before travelling.

Moulvibazar in the Wider Destination of Sylhet Division

Moulvibazar is part of Sylhet Division, whose nature destinations offer further contrasts. Satchari National Park has several marked walking trails; Ratargul is a freshwater swamp forest on the Gowain River. During the rainy season, you can travel by boat across Tanguar Haor. If you extend your trip beyond Moulvibazar to include Sylhet Division, these varied landscapes can inform your choice of destinations.
