In Riezlern, different interests have specific points of connection: the Walser Cultural Trail: Riezlern Village Loop starts right in the village centre, and the Kanzelwandbahn cable car is also located there. Cultural history, waterside routes and seasonal sports offer different focal points for planning your trip.
Cultural Trail and Church Art
The Walser Cultural Trail combines its village loop with information boards at buildings and sites of cultural and historical interest. This means that local history is one of the topics you encounter along the way, in addition to the trail itself. Riezlern Parish Church contains several specific references to the history of art and architecture: the baptismal font bears the year 1608 and is decorated with Gothic ornamentation. The present-day Maria Opferung parish church was rebuilt in 1889 in the Neo-Romanesque style. In 1903/1904, Martin von Feuerstein and his master class created paintings using the casein technique.
Another cultural point of interest is the Fatima Chapel Maria Dank in the Riezlern-Schwende district. It was built in 1950; inside are frescoes and stained glass by Vorarlberg artist Hubert Berchtold. Together with the cultural trail and the parish church, it offers a variety of themes for a stay, without requiring all the sites to be part of a single route.
Waterside Routes and Activities for Children
The Burmiwasser Trail leads from the Kanzelwand mountain station to Lake Riezler Alpsee. At various stations, there are pools, water wheels and sluices where children can experiment with water. The Kanzelwandbahn cable car is in the village centre; its operating details may vary by season. Before your trip, also check whether the Burmiwasser Trail is open for the season.
The Burmiweg offers a different focus: it runs along the Breitach from Hirschegg to Riezlern and is suitable for strollers. There are nine play and activity stations along the Breitachweg. Riezlern outdoor swimming pool adds to the water-based activities with a 50-metre lap lane and a 59-metre water slide. Operating conditions at the outdoor pool may change with the season, so check the latest information before visiting.
There are also individual places to visit for activities with children away from these trails. WalserPark Riezlern includes a BikeArea for first attempts and playful practice on their own bikes. A walk to Riezlern playground passes through the village centre and by the playground in Kurpark. Which of these options takes centre stage depends on whether you are looking for a route, water-based activities or a place to play and be active.
Nature and Seasonal Activities
The Schwand Nature Experience Area includes a basin for arm baths, a gravel-bottomed wading pool and a quiet spot with wooden loungers. For a different kind of nature route, the Schwarzwasserbach Grand Nature Explorer Adventure leads from Schröflesäge along the Schwarzwasserbach to the natural bridge.
A circular hike through the Breitachklamm starts in Riezlern, Walserschanz, and follows a route via Zwingsteg, Sesselweg, Alpe Dornach, Klamm Chapel and the Breitachklamm ticket office, before returning to Riezlern, Walserschanz. Trail conditions and access to the attraction may vary by season; check the latest conditions in advance.
In winter, CrystalGround at the foot of the Kanzelwandbahn offers opportunities for snowboarding and freeskiing. The Two-Country Via Ferrata on the Kanzelwand is intended for experienced mountaineers and climbers; conditions and access may depend on the weather and season. These activities are suited to different experience levels, so plan for them separately based on your travel dates and ability.
