Nenzing combines a long local history with striking natural destinations. The Nenzing Cultural Trail leads from the Bronze and Iron Ages to recent history; Alpe Gamp offers walks and longer hikes. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing these cultural and scenic highlights from the special journey to Nenzinger Himmel.
Cultural Trail and Historical Traces
The Nenzing Cultural Trail leads through local history. Its timeline spans the Bronze and Iron Ages, the Roman period and early Christianity in the 6th century, as well as the age of knights, the Gothic and Baroque periods, and Nenzing’s more recent and recent history.
The trail passes Scheibenstuhl. Excavations carried out between 2005 and 2008 identified it as a prehistoric burnt offering site. Beneath today’s parish church lies the crypt church, identified as the oldest church in Vorarlberg.
A Roman-built fort stood at Stellfeder in the 4th century AD. It served as a guard and lookout tower, as well as a refuge for the Romance-speaking population. The fort dates from the 4th century; the Cultural Trail places early Christianity in the 6th century.
Alpe Gamp and the Landscape
Situated at an altitude of 1,564 metres, Alpe Gamp offers walks and longer hikes to a variety of natural attractions. It borders the Principality of Liechtenstein; hikers can enjoy distant views stretching from Lake Constance to the Arlberg. The alp also has a strong connection to summer cuisine: its alpine dairy produces specialities using old traditional recipes during the summer.
The Meng Gorge offers another way to experience the landscape. The Meng was renaturalised below the structure, and a park was created there for the local community to enjoy as a nearby recreational area. Alpe Gamp and the Meng Gorge offer different highlights: the alp combines its high-altitude setting with hiking, while the gorge combines renaturalisation with recreation in the park.
