You can get to know Marul through specific hiking destinations and its architectural history: the forest adventure trail offers two routes, a hike along the Marulbach leads to the Fuchswaldalpe, and a mountain trail crosses the Faludriga Alpe into a protected area. The Curacy Church of St Catherine and the Hubertus Chapel also add their own cultural highlights. If you are considering Marul as a travel destination, the route lengths, named destinations and historical dates can help you identify what interests you.
Hiking with different focal points
The Marul forest adventure trail offers routes 3.4 and 5.6 kilometres long. The two routes differ by 2.2 kilometres, making it easy to compare them when planning your day. The trail invites you to hike, linger, play and take part in creative activities. So it is not just about walking: breaks, play and creating things yourself are part of the experience, too. You can decide which of the two route lengths best fits your day based on your plans.
Another hike starts at the Marul hiking car park and follows the Marulbach to the Fuchswaldalpe. Unlike the two routes on the forest adventure trail, this hike has a clearly named destination and follows the stream. You can choose between different kinds of hiking: two route lengths and a variety of activities on the forest adventure trail, or a tour with the Fuchswaldalpe as its destination. Conditions along the Marulbach can vary seasonally, so take this into account when planning.
A mountain trail leads through the Faludriga Alpe into the Faludriga-Nova Nature Reserve, which is also a core zone of the biosphere park, on the hike to the Faludriga-Nova Core Zone. For this hike, take regional bus L575 to the “Marul Kirche” stop. Check the timetable before travelling, as bus connections may change. This gives you another destination defined by its core zone, in addition to the hikes on the forest adventure trail and along the Marulbach.
A church and chapel with a history of their own
The Curacy Church of St Catherine in Marul was built around 1670. Architect Anton Rhomberg restored it in 1949. Mila Bjelik-Stöhr designed the stained-glass windows in the choir in 1948. The sequence of dates puts different aspects of the church into context: the building dates from the 17th century, while the stained-glass designs and restoration followed just one year apart. This brings the building’s history, artistic design and later restoration together.
The Hubertus Chapel is located on the forest adventure trail, next to a reconstructed lime kiln. Particularly active members of the Catholic Rural Youth (KLJ) at the time built the chapel in 1963 in the Engel parcel. Its construction date, the group responsible and the place name give the chapel a specific historical context. Together with the neighbouring lime kiln, it is a stop on the forest adventure trail where nature and culture come together.
Seasonal planning around the hiking car park
The season also matters at the Marul organic dairy: during the winter months, it is open every morning; in summer, sales take place at the Käsehüsli at the Marul hiking car park. This car park is also the starting point for the hike along the Marulbach to the Fuchswaldalpe. This means you can bring together two specific points of reference for summer at the same named location: the place to buy dairy products and the start of the hike. Check the seasonal information before your trip if you plan to visit the organic dairy.
