At the heart of Gallspach lies the nature experience park along Geymannstraße, between the Zeileis Institute and the Marienheim residential and nursing home. Other topics range from a hike with clearly specified route details to views in clear weather and the history of buildings and therapy. For planning your trip, it is helpful to start with one question: do you want a hiking trail to shape your day, or would you prefer to focus your stay more on cultural history?
Trails, Views and Route Profiles
The Alpenblickweg is 10 km long and climbs 170 metres; allow about three hours for the walk. These figures answer different planning questions: distance, ascent and approximate time required. In clear weather, several viewpoints offer views across the Hausruckviertel as far as the Alpine peaks. If you would like to linger there, allow extra time in addition to the walking time. The views depend on clear weather—a useful consideration if the panorama is important when choosing your hiking day. Check trail conditions before setting out.
The Teufelsgrabenweg has a different profile: it leads from the town centre steeply downhill through the forest, via Tirolerhof, to the village of Schwabegg and on to St. Georgen. The steep descent and sequence of named places shape this trail, whereas the Alpenblickweg is described in terms of distance, ascent and approximate walking time. This lets you compare the two trails based on the factors that matter for your day’s plans. Check trail conditions before this hike, too.
Castle, Church and the History of Therapy
Gallspach Castle is a typical moated castle and has been privately owned by the Zeileis family since 1912. It can therefore only be viewed from the outside. The exterior is the appropriate way to visit; a tour inside the castle is not available.
A large part of Gallspach Parish Church was renovated or newly built in 2005. The artistic exterior design and the construction of the Way of the Cross were the work of local artist Erwin Burgstaller. The church thus illustrates a specific building phase and named artistic works: the renovation or reconstruction of much of the building, as well as the design of its exterior and the Way of the Cross.
The museum at the Zeileis Health Centre documents the history of the electrophysical health resort and the high-frequency therapy established at this site. The centre’s therapy is based on treatment with high-frequency currents. This brings together the historical development of the health resort and the basis of its treatment method. It is a clearly defined subject for anyone interested in the history of medical treatments.
Choose the Focus of Your Stay
For the first option, walking time, ascent and the weather-dependent views are important planning considerations. For a cultural focus, the castle, parish church and museum offer different subjects—though a visit to the castle is limited to viewing it from the outside. Check trail conditions before setting out, and bear in mind that the views open up in clear weather.
