A stay in Gasteig offers hiking and cycling routes alongside architectural and cultural history. The trails have different highlights: the Kirchdorfer Sonnseitrunde leads to the hamlet of Gasteig, a hike from the district goes into the Kaiserbachtal, and the Kaiserbachtal cycling route passes through Gasteig.

Architectural and Cultural History

One special chapter in the history of architecture is the original 500-year-old farmhouse at the Tyrolean show dairy. It was moved from its original site at the family farm in Ellmau to its current location in Gasteig. To move it, it was dismantled into 1,500 individual pieces and reassembled. Its age is not the only thing that makes it noteworthy: the elaborate relocation is also part of the house’s history.

The Devil’s Chapel on the Opferstein in Gasteig-Griesenau dates from 1735 and was restored in 1983. The two dates mark separate phases in the chapel’s history: its construction and a later restoration. Plague columns stand in Gasteig and on the Leukentalweg.

Hikes with Different Destinations

The Kirchdorfer Sonnseitrunde leads to the hamlet of Gasteig and past a small reservoir built in 1901/1902. It was once an important means of generating energy. The hike thus brings together the hamlet as a destination and the reservoir’s former role in energy generation as two distinct points of interest.

The hike to Teufelsgasse starts at a small chapel by the hiking car park in Hinterberg, between the Kirchdorf hamlets of Gasteig and Griesenau. The rock faces flanking Teufelsgasse feature around 1,500 engraved, scraped and pecked images across an area of almost 400 square metres. Unlike the dated buildings, here the focus is on the number, area and techniques used to make the rock images.

A hike from the Gasteig district leads through the Kaiserbachtal nature paradise. In the area around Gasteig, the Kaiserbachtal stretches through the Kaisergebirge Nature Reserve from the Kirchdorf district of Griesenau to the Stripsenjoch; a hiking trail runs along the Kaiserbach stream throughout the year. The hike from Gasteig and the trail along the stream offer two different perspectives: the specific route from the district and the wider context of the valley.

After the Metzgeralm, the hike descends along a forest road towards Gasteig and Kramerhof.

Cycling Routes Through and Towards Gasteig

The Kaiserbachtal cycling route leads from the centre of Kirchdorf through Gasteig and onwards towards Schwendt and Kössen to Griesenau, before entering the Kaiserbachtal. The MTB routes each have different details: Route 231 starts in Kirchdorf in Tirol and initially heads towards Gasteig; on the return leg, Route 250 follows a paved road to Gasteig. This distinguishes a described route that continues into the valley, a starting point and initial direction, and a return route with a specified road surface.
