In the immediate vicinity of Geiergraben, church destinations connected to Weng meet a variety of hiking routes. For planning, it is worth considering the waypoints separately: the Dörfelstein East Hiking Trail passes through the Geigergraben; the “Weng im Gesäuse: Mittagskogel” hike climbs through the Geiergraben. Grabneralm and Grabnerstein are further specific points of interest, with different elevations. This makes it possible to weigh up culture, cheese production and hiking as separate interests, rather than combining different sections of trail into a single route.
Church destinations connected to Weng
In the immediate vicinity of Geiergraben, the Weng parish church is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian. The Sebastian Chapel also belongs to the parish of Weng. The church and chapel are therefore both associated with Weng ecclesiastically, but with different specific details: the parish church’s dedication is named, while the chapel’s parish affiliation is stated. If you are interested in church destinations, both names offer a specific point of reference when choosing places to visit in the area.
Elevation, peaks and cheese production
The Grabneralm mountain hut is situated on a high alpine pasture at an elevation of 1,395 m, on the edge of Gesäuse National Park. From Grabneralm, Grabnerstein can be reached via trail 036 in about one hour and 15 minutes; the summit lies at an elevation of 1,847 m. The elevation figures refer to two different points, while the time relates to the described route from the alpine pasture to the summit. As an approximate figure, it helps with planning this section of the route, but not with estimating a complete tour that includes additional trails or breaks. Nearby, the “Grabneralm” demonstration dairy provides information about goat cheese production and sells cheese. This adds a food-production theme to the hiking and elevation-related points of interest; you can consider it as a separate interest alongside a summit hike.
Distinguish hiking trails by their routes
After the last houses in the settlement, the Dörfelstein East Hiking Trail passes through the Geigergraben, climbing steadily towards Dörfelstein. For orientation, note where the trail leaves the settlement and the subsequent climb through the gorge. By comparison, trail 036 can be described as the route from Grabneralm to Grabnerstein, with an approximate walking time of about one hour and 15 minutes. One trail is thus characterized by its sequence across the terrain, while the other is additionally described by a time estimate for the specified route.
The “Weng im Gesäuse: Mittagskogel” hike starts near Grabnerhof and follows a forest road uphill through the Geiergraben. After this section, it reaches Johannesbründl at an elevation of about 1,000 m. Further up, around 100 metres below Admonter Haus, the trail joins the normal ascent from Buchauer Sattel. This gives a sequence of notable points: the start near Grabnerhof, the climb through the gorge, the spring and the junction with the normal ascent. These waypoints distinguish this route both from the Dörfelstein East Hiking Trail through the Geigergraben and from the route between Grabneralm and Grabnerstein.
A Styrian hiking trail catalogue from 2004 lists trail 627 as continuing via Schröckendorf, Steinfeldsiedlung and Geiergraben to Pitz, where it joins trail 635. The entry records a route as it was at the time, but is not a current report on trail conditions. If you include trail 627 in your plans, check this route against current trail information.
