Wildon Schlossberg is one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the southeastern Alpine region—and also a place you can explore on foot, with its castle ruins. In Wildon, you’ll find a range of ways to explore: an archaeological exhibition space, an eight-stop literary trail, a section of the Southern Austrian Way of St. James, and the Mur and Kainach rivers where they meet.

Archaeology at Schlossberg and the Hengist Museum

The Hengist Museum is located in Wildon Castle. Its archaeological exhibition space offers insight into prehistory, Roman times and the Middle Ages. The museum also provides an overview of the development of central Styria, from the arrival of the first settled farmers in the Neolithic period through to the Middle Ages. This gives you two different perspectives on time: the three periods presented in the exhibition space and the development of a region over a long period. Schlossberg complements this with its archaeological site and castle ruins, which can be explored on foot. The museum and Schlossberg thus offer different points of focus: one provides an overview of history and historical periods, while the other is a tangible archaeological site.

Literary trail: eight stops from the town center to the Kainach

At eight stops, the Wildon Literary Trail tells passages from the verse novella “The Cat” by Herrand von Wildon. Its route is clearly defined, too: it leads from the town center over the historic castle hill and down to the Kainach. Here, literature and the route go hand in hand, with the stops using a particular work as the thread running through a route across town. If you’re interested in Herrand von Wildon, this offers a different approach from the museum: the trail focuses on a literary work, while the exhibition space covers different historical periods and the development of central Styria.

Marked routes and cycling

Another route with a distinct theme is the section of the Southern Austrian Way of St. James that passes through Wildon and is marked with scallop-shell signs. This sets it apart from the literary trail, whose eight stops feature passages from “The Cat.” Buchkogel is also a Wildon attraction that can be experienced on foot. Cyclists have a specific point of interest: a route in Wildon joins the Mur Cycle Path R2. These are different ways to connect with a particular route or place in Wildon; they do not automatically form a single tour.

Cultural center and open-air stage

Many events take place at the Wildon Castle cultural center. Wildon Schlossbergbühne, an open-air stage, is also located on Wildon Schlossberg; its construction took three years. If an event is the reason for your trip, check the relevant dates before planning your stay. This leaves room to consider Wildon’s events alongside its archaeological and literary attractions.

Choose the focus of your stay

If you’re considering Wildon as an overnight destination, comparing your interests can make the decision easier: the museum offers a view of several historical periods and the development of central Styria, while the literary trail focuses on a single work and leads from town over the castle hill to the Kainach. Consider whether a broader historical perspective or a literary-themed route better suits your travel plans. This can help you decide whether Wildon is a good fit for your stay before you look for hotels.
