Seckau combines monastic heritage with trails, cross-country ski trails and religious sites. A circular hiking trail passes right by the Weiermoarteich pond; the Chakrenwanderweg offers views of the Seckau Alps. When planning your trip, it is worth considering culture, scenery and winter cross-country skiing as distinct highlights.

Abbey and Basilica: Seckau’s Cultural Heritage

Seckau Benedictine Abbey has a history spanning more than 850 years. Among its most notable sights is the Habsburg Mausoleum. Seckau Basilica has been a place of prayer and the search for God for 860 years. The abbey is also home to the permanent exhibition “World of the Monks.” History, prayer and the exhibition therefore offer distinct cultural points of interest. If you choose Seckau for its monastic history, you will find more than just one aspect to explore.

Hiking Trails with Varied Scenery

Weiermoarteich is a natural pond at the foot of the Seckau Alps. A circular hiking trail through Seckau passes right by it. Another option is the Chakrenwanderweg: it is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and offers views of the Seckau Alps. You can choose between a circular trail that passes directly by the pond and a themed route with a stated length and mountain views.

Llama and alpaca hikes are offered at Binderhof in Seckau. They take place by arrangement. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, arrange a suitable time in advance.

Trails and Views on Tremmelberg

The Tremmelberg loop starts in Seckau. Its descent leads via Kalvarienkirche and then follows the Zentralalpenweg back to Seckau. Tremmelberg is also home to the “Turm im Gebirge,” also known as “Tower Power.” The viewing tower is 41 metres high and offers views across the Murtal, parts of the Red Bull Ring and the Murtal mountain scenery.

Pilgrimage and Cross-Country Skiing

Maria Schnee Hochalm is a pilgrimage chapel in the Seckau Alps, at an altitude of 1,880 metres. Pilgrimage services are held there every year. For travellers interested in religious sites, it combines its role as a pilgrimage chapel with a location in a mountain setting.

The two cross-country ski trails differ in length and difficulty rating: the Panoramaloipe is 5.2 kilometres long and rated easy to intermediate. The Tremmelbergloipe is 7.5 kilometres long and rated intermediate to difficult. When choosing, you can therefore take both the trail length and the stated difficulty into account. When there is sufficient snow, the Seckau cross-country ski trail offers classic and skating routes. You should also take the weather conditions into account when preparing for your trip.

Cycling and Seckau Gingerbread

The “Nimm’s Radl 05 - Seckau-Gaal Runde” also offers a variety of scenery. The first section runs from Seckau to Gaal, past fields, farms and forests, and offers views of the surrounding mountains. The second section leads from Seckau via St. Martha, Feistritz and Kobenz back to Seckau.

A culinary treat for groups is a Seckau gingerbread tasting at Café and Konditorei Regner. It is available by prior reservation. Making a reservation is therefore a specific planning step if you want to include this activity for a travel group.
