The Volkshauspark on the left bank of the Mur offers a view of the historic Murfront of Frohnleiten’s picturesque old town. The Tabor, the religious buildings and the monastery garden add further distinctive themes. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose your focus from architectural history, cultural events, a market visit and leisure activities.
Murfront and the history of fortification
The Tabor is Frohnleiten’s oldest fortification and dates back to the 15th century. Its protective and defensive function adds another aspect to the view of the historic Murfront: here, the focus is on the town’s former defences, while Volkshauspark opens up views of the riverbank and old town. This places two different perspectives on local history side by side: the fortifications and the townscape along the Mur.
Monastery church, garden and crypt
The monastery church was built between 1679 and 1689 by Jakob Schmerlaib as the monastery church of the Servite Order. Paths in the monastery garden invite visitors to stroll; the garden is also home to a Baroque garden pavilion and a carefully restored historic greenhouse. The garden adds landscaped outdoor spaces to the architectural history, while the church marks a specific historical period.
The Church of St. George offers another historical layer: during its renovation from 1978 to 1985, an older Romanesque crypt was discovered, excavated and opened to visitors. Check the current visiting options for the crypt before your visit.
Theatre and cultural events
Frohnleiten has had a theatre tradition since 1790. For many years, performances have been held on a stage in the main square during the summer. If an evening at the theatre is important to your stay, check the dates for your travel period; the programme may change. This allows you to distinguish the long-standing theatre tradition from attending a specific performance, for which up-to-date dates are essential.
Farmers’ market and Kulinarium
The Frohnleiten farmers’ market offers tangy cheeses, fresh vegetables, fine honey, flavourful fish specialities, award-winning fine spirits and original handicrafts. Individual vendors and products may change, so the specific selection can vary from one visit to another. The annual Kulinarium combines musical entertainment with culinary specialities from Frohnleiten’s restaurateurs; dates and format may change.
When planning a culinary stay, it helps to know the difference: the farmers’ market offers products and handicrafts, while the Kulinarium is an annual event featuring music and food from local restaurateurs. If you would like to plan either one in particular, check the current selection or dates in advance.
Golf and adventure pool
The Murhof has an 18-hole championship course, a fully equipped practice facility and a golf school. The adventure pool in Frohnleiten’s sports and leisure park offers opportunities for activity and relaxation, as well as a 12,000 m² sunbathing lawn. This gives you a choice of different leisure activities: golf with a course, practice facility and golf school, or a visit to the pool with its large sunbathing lawn. Pool operations may be subject to seasonal changes; check the current opening hours before your visit.
