A high hip roof and two corner towers define Dorfheim Castle; the History Adventure Trail explores various historical periods through 13 partly interactive stations. There are also hiking routes with different information on difficulty, duration and route. When looking for a holiday apartment in Dorfheim, it is worth first considering your preferred hike and its starting point.
Dorfheim Castle and the History Adventure Trail
Dorfheim Castle is located at Dorfheimerstraße 25 in Dorfheim. The Federal Monuments Authority’s list of protected monuments dated 30 June 2025 lists it as a protected monument. Its distinctive architectural features include the high hip roof and two corner towers. The History Adventure Trail complements this look at the castle with stations covering the Ice Age, Roman times and other historical periods. The station content may be updated.
The History Adventure Trail starts at Saalfelden railway station, which can be reached from Saalfelden town centre by post bus. The route follows Dorfheimer StraĂźe to Dorfheim Castle, passes through the Dorfheim district and branches off onto Abdeckerweg about 350 metres beyond the castle. In this way, the trail links its themed stations with a specific route through Dorfheim. Before setting off, check the current route and post bus timetables; routes and public transport connections may change.
Hikes with different highlights
The Lenzing Loop is described as a moderately difficult route covering 12.4 kilometres, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 5 minutes. It includes a variety of surfaces, including natural trails. After the Plague Cross, the loop follows a farm track along the Saalach. The stated difficulty, distance and duration provide a concrete basis for planning; trail conditions may change.
The Plague Cross is also a cultural and historical landmark in its own right: it commemorates people who fell victim to plague epidemics. The S7 Plague Cross Loop reaches the historic Plague Cross and then follows a narrow asphalt road into the Dorfheim district. Near Dorfheim, a Plague Cross Loop passes a memorial to the victims of plague epidemics and offers views of Lichtenberg Castle and the hermitage. Visibility depends on the weather.
Another route described as “Saalfelden from the Outside” runs from the Biberburg on the Harhamerbach via the Plague Cross on the Gründbichl to Dorfheim Castle. The Great Saalfelden Loop is designed as a winter hike and passes through Euring, Dorfheim, Bachwinkel and Wiesing. Along the way, it passes the Dorfheimer Schlossstüberl, where hikers can stop for refreshments.
The “Saalfelden Wiesing (B311)” bus stop is about a ten-minute walk from the starting point of the Great Saalfelden Loop. This differs from the route information for the History Adventure Trail, which starts at Saalfelden railway station. So when comparing these trails, make sure you note which stop or starting point belongs to the tour you have chosen. The routes of the Great Saalfelden Loop and other trails may change; check the latest information before setting off.
Plan your accommodation around your itinerary
Your main planned activity can help guide your choice of a holiday apartment: the History Adventure Trail has 13 stations and a described route to the castle; the Lenzing Loop has stated difficulty, distance and duration; and the Great Saalfelden Loop is a winter hike through four named places. This information lets you compare the hikes without combining them into a single loop. First decide which route will be the focus of your stay, then check its individual starting point and current route.
