Unternberg lies in the broad Mur Valley at an altitude of about 1,025 metres. Notable features of the village include Moosham Castle and the parish church of St. Ulrich, as well as protected landscapes, trails and seasonal activities. You can tailor your stay to your interest in cultural history, nature or outdoor activities—and also check which options suit the time of year you plan to travel.

Moosham Castle and its history

Above Unternberg in the Mur Valley, Moosham Castle sits on a rocky hill on the wooded Mitterberg. It is Salzburg’s third-largest castle complex. Remains of a Roman settlement were discovered at Moosham Castle; other attractions include the Princely Rooms, where archbishops once stayed. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday. Visits are possible only as part of a guided tour for groups of two or more. Check the current schedule before your visit.

Historical periods at St. Ulrich

The parish church of St. Ulrich also reflects several historical periods. By the 15th century at the latest, a place of worship stood on the site of today’s church. The tower houses a bell dating from 1431. A Romanesque cross from the 12th century was installed in the church in 1984; it is on loan from the Prodingerbauer farm in Tamsweg. The cross’s date of origin and date of installation should be distinguished: it dates from the 12th century but was not brought to the church until 1984.

Landscape and nature

The Mooshamer Moos in Unternberg is designated as a protected landscape area. Erlebnisreich Mur, on the banks of the Mur River, invites visitors to relax and enjoy nature. The two nature attractions offer different experiences: a protected landscape and a riverside place expressly intended for relaxation and enjoying nature.

Summer and winter activities

Unternberg has hiking trails and cycling routes, as well as opportunities for Nordic walking and mountain biking. The activities differ in how you get around: hiking and Nordic walking are done on foot, while cycling and mountain biking put the bike at the centre. In summer, the Unternberg Bauernherbst is part of the village’s cultural and traditional events. The options therefore range from outdoor activities to a seasonal cultural highlight.

In winter, there are winter hiking trails, and a cross-country ski trail also runs along the Mur Valley near Unternberg. The Himmelsteig (No. 88) runs above the village centre. Information boards explain measures to restore the protective forest on Unternberg’s sunny side, giving the trail a connection to landscape conservation. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

If you’d like to include a ski area in your winter plans, consider nearby Katschberg. It is quick to reach from Unternberg by ski bus or car. As seasonal transport services may change, check the connection in advance.

When to travel and finding accommodation

If you’re looking for a hotel in Unternberg, the time of year can be a useful first filter: in summer, options include the Bauernherbst and local trails; in winter, you can choose from winter walks, cross-country skiing and the connection to Katschberg.
