When planning a visit to Katschberg, it is worth considering the season and your interests: in summer, Pöllatal offers several ways to get there and explore nature along the Lieser; in winter, a free ski bus connects Rennweg with the Katschberg ski area. Churches and mining add concrete local history to the nature-focused attractions.
Pöllatal: Nature reserve and summer trails
The Pöllatal nature reserve extends into Rennweg am Katschberg. The region around the Inneres Pöllatal core zone has been designated a European protected area since 2009. In summer, Pöllatal can be reached from the barbecue area or P1 car park on foot, by bicycle or by the Tschu-Tschu-Bahn. This means you can plan to get there on foot, by bike or by train. If you plan to use the train, check its current operating status before your trip.
The stream adventure trail in Pöllatal follows the Lieser. Information boards let children explore nature, making nature discovery a specific feature of the trail. The Tschu-Tschu-Bahn can carry up to 62 people through the valley and is offered for family and group outings. The two activities offer different experiences: the stream adventure trail focuses on its route along the Lieser and the information boards, while the train offers a ride through the valley and is available to families and groups.
Seasonal connections and trails
In winter, a free ski bus connects Rennweg with the Katschberg ski area in just a few minutes. The journey time is given as a brief approximate estimate; check the current winter timetable before travelling. The seasonal Katschberg Advent Trail, by contrast, requires you to travel on foot for one section: the following stretch, about 2 km long, can only be completed on foot. Before planning, also check the current route conditions. The ski bus and Advent Trail therefore involve different planning considerations: a connection to the ski area on the one hand, and walking along the specified section on the other.
Churches and history in the Katschtal
The parish church of St. Peter im Katschtal in Rennweg was first mentioned in a document in 1351. Most of the altars and statues in St. Peter im Katschtal date from around 1700. Since the late Middle Ages, St. Peter bei Rennweg served as the hereditary burial place of the Lords of Katsch. The church’s documented mention, furnishings and burial function provide different chronological and historical points of reference.
The present-day branch church of St. Georgen im Katschtal is a late Baroque replacement building dating from 1780 to 1782. Josef Messner completed the central panel of the late Baroque high altar in 1861. The building and the artwork can therefore be considered separately in terms of their dates: the years given refer to the replacement building and the later completion of the altar painting.
The historic Pocherhaus in Oberdorf is also part of the region’s mining history. It was the centre of mining in Pöllatal, where gold and silver were extracted. Together with the churches, this subject offers a different perspective on the area than its trails and seasonal transport: the focus here is on historic uses and architectural history rather than access and getting around.
