Griesbach combines two cross-country ski trails of different lengths with hiking routes such as the Great Bear Trail. The church adds a cultural and historical dimension to the outdoor activities. The options range from winter techniques and stage planning to the history of the parish.

Cross-country skiing and seasonal conditions

The specific trails differ in both length and technique: the Langau Trail in Griesbach is 6.3 km long and designed for classic cross-country skiing; the 3 km Kreuzberg Trail can be used for both classic and skating styles. This gives you two different trail lengths and technique options to consider. At 6.3 rather than 3 kilometres, the Langau Trail is slightly more than twice as long as the Kreuzberg Trail. Ice skating is also mentioned as another winter sports option, complementing the winter focus.

In addition, the Gerungser Hochplateau trails are spread across the villages of Klein Wetzles and Griesbach. In the Klein Wetzles–Griesbach area, the cross-country ski trails offer a suitable route for every ability level. Operations are seasonal and snow conditions may vary; check local conditions before planning your winter visit.

Hiking trails through Griesbach

The third stage of the Great Bear Trail passes through Griesbach between GroĂź Gerungs and Arbesbach. It is 18 km long, with a stated walking time of five hours. These figures provide a concrete basis for planning a day trip. The trail also offers an opportunity to take a detour into the village of Griesbach. After Griesbach, it continues over open hills and through sparse forests towards the Hammerschmiede Museum on the GroĂźe Kamp.

The Waldviertel Four-Market Trail 612 also leads to Griesbach in its fourth and final section: from Arbesbach, it runs through Kamp and over the Große Kamp to the village. The Bergland route passes through Griesbach and continues to Kamp. Asphalt and dirt roads lead downhill to Griesbach and then uphill to Antenfeinhöfen. Comparing the two routes, the Four-Market Trail follows the sequence through Kamp and over the Große Kamp; the Bergland route additionally features different road surfaces and a descent followed by an ascent.

Church and landscape in the municipal area

The Griesbach parish was founded in 1784. The church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas and was built according to a Josephinian plan. The parish, dedication and building plan give local history a distinct focus alongside the trails.

The hiking landscape of the municipality of Groß Gerungs includes granite boulders, unspoiled ponds, dark forests and open meadows. Numerous well-marked paths and routes provide access to this landscape. The municipality’s leisure map includes all hiking and mountain biking trails in the area. This overview of local trails complements the descriptions of the specific routes that pass through Griesbach.
