Statzendorf brings together archaeological evidence, sacred buildings and trails. A striking archaeological comparison spans from the Hallstatt-period burial ground to the Kuffern Situla, dating from the early La Tène culture. Churches and chapels add other cultural highlights; hiking and cycling trails offer further ways to explore the municipality.
Burial Ground and Situla
The Statzendorf burial ground is one of the largest Hallstatt-period burial grounds in Lower Austria and comprises around 380 burials. The Kuffern Situla represents a different era: this Celtic wine bucket is dated to 475–425 BC. Together, they offer two distinct archaeological points of reference—a Hallstatt-period burial ground and a vessel from the early La Tène culture.
Its figurative depiction is particularly noteworthy: on a vessel of this kind, the Kuffern Situla features the only depiction found north of the Alps to date. The burial ground and the situla are therefore not interchangeable keywords, but refer to different types of finds and periods. Anyone interested in the municipality’s archaeological history will find a concrete starting point here.
Churches, Chapels and Wayside Monuments
In Statzendorf, the late Baroque parish church of St Mark is one of the sights. The “Stone Loaf of Bread” is kept in the church. The branch church of St Pancras in Kuffern is also a sight; the protected ensemble comprises the church, cemetery and defensive wall. The two churches offer distinct cultural points of reference within the municipality.
Smaller buildings are also part of the local heritage. The Chapel of St Helena in Absdorf dates from the 17th century and was formerly a castle chapel. The Walpersdorf estate administration’s manor farm is also in Absdorf. As of 23 June 2026, Lower Austria’s heritage register lists these properties, as well as the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Maria Elend, the field or wayside chapel on Hauptstraße in Statzendorf, and Wayside Shrine 326 in Weidling, as protected by ordinance. Local wayside shrines also include examples with reverse glass paintings.
Hiking and the Lower Austrian Way of St James
The Statzendorf hiking routes start at the municipal office. They are accessible by train; the walk from the station to the trail starting point takes five minutes. This provides a specific walking direction from the station to the start of the routes for planning purposes. The Lower Austrian Way of St James also passes through the municipal area, on the stretch between Rampelkreuz and the Maria Elend Chapel.
The Maria Elend pilgrimage chapel lies around two kilometres north of Kuffern, on a hill along the Lower Austrian Way of St James. The small, octagonal building dates from 1895. From the hill, the view extends north to Göttweig Abbey and south to the Styrian-Lower Austrian Limestone Alps. Here, a building with distinctive architecture, its setting on the pilgrimage route and the two stated views come together.
Cycling Route and Wine
There is also a specific route to explore by bike: the variant of the Fladnitztal Cycling Route via Statzendorf explicitly passes through the village. Statzendorf is also listed as a rail connection for the cycling route. Walkers can find information about local hiking routes and the Lower Austrian Way of St James; for cyclists, the Fladnitztal Cycling Route offers a separate point of connection.
The municipality is shaped by traditional wine-growing. Kuffern Situla wines can be enjoyed year-round in the municipality of Statzendorf’s Heurigen cellars and Buschenschank taverns. Wine thus complements the archaeological and sacred themes with a local food-and-drink experience, without requiring a particular route or a visit on a specific day.
