A prehistory museum, Late Gothic church art, wine festivals, and paths through orchards and forests give Nußdorf ob der Traisen a range of cultural and scenic highlights. Visitors planning a stay can choose from archaeological exhibits, architectural and art history, viewpoints, and hiking trails.

Prehistory Museum: Finds and Special Exhibits

The Nussdorf-Traisental Prehistory Museum presents archaeological finds from excavations of 2,300 Bronze Age graves near Nussdorf in Franzhausen. A 33-ton mammoth, recreated from cast stone, stands in front of the museum. The museum also displays the oldest grape seed found in the Traisental—a model made of clay and plaster, enlarged a hundredfold.

The exhibits offer a range of points of interest: the finds are connected with the Bronze Age graves, while the enlarged grape seed model focuses on a single object. The museum offers interactive programs for children and adults, special exhibitions, lectures, and expert-guided tours.

Views and Trails Through the Landscape

Parapluiberg is a viewpoint near the Prehistory Museum in Nußdorf. From there, the panoramic views stretch across the Tullnerfeld, into the Danube and Traisental valleys, and as far as the foothills of the Alps. The “Maria Elend” circular hiking trail offers a different perspective: it passes wayside shrines, orchards, small villages, and forests. Views along the route include Göttweig Abbey, the Danube Valley, the Tullnerfeld, the Traisental, and the foothills of the Alps.

At Parapluiberg, the focus is on long-distance views across wide areas; on the “Maria Elend” trail, the landscapes along the route are also part of the experience described. Nußdorf ob der Traisen lies at the foot of a ridge planted with vineyards and orchards and enjoys a favorable climate. Wine and fruit are thus both part of the landscape and a feature of local wine festivals.

Themed Hikes

Several themed hikes have been developed under the title “Cultural Heritage Trail – Nußdorf ob der Traisen, Reichersdorf and Theyern.” The three place names in the title reflect the project’s geographical scope. The hikes can be accessed via Outdooractive on a smartphone and downloaded from the market town’s website.

Alongside the circular hiking trail described through specific landscapes and views, visitors can also choose themed hikes with information available digitally.

Late Gothic Church and Regional Wines

The parish church of Nußdorf ob der Traisen is a remarkable Late Gothic building. It was designed to be particularly defensive and has a striking west tower with a high hipped roof. The nave features keystones with openwork foliage, crossed vine knives, and grapes. These details connect architectural forms with motifs from viticulture.

The furnishings also include a statue of the Virgin Mary dating from around 1500 and a painting of the Good Samaritan attributed to the circle of Johann Michael Rottmayr. The church can therefore be appreciated not only for its Late Gothic design but also for its individual pictorial and decorative features.

Wine festivals are held every year in the castle garden and in the old vaulted rooms of the castle cellar. Wines from the region are available for tasting. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the latest dates in advance.
