Sankt Oswald combines marked hiking trails, expansive views and a parish church with a history dating back to the 12th century. Choose from routes of varying lengths, difficulty levels and themes.

Hiking Trails and Route Options

Several well-marked hiking trails lead through the entire municipality. Three start at the church square: the Peace Cross Trail No. 12, the Kneipp Trail and the Heart Stone Trail No. 11. The Peace Cross Trail is easy, 3 km long and offers panoramic views in all four directions throughout the circular route. The Kneipp Trail is of moderate difficulty, 10 km long and listed as taking around three hours to walk. The Heart Stone Trail is 9 km long and includes ten stations that highlight important values in life. This means that one starting point offers an easy loop with views in every direction, a longer trail of moderate difficulty and a themed route with stations. An inn listed on the Kneipp Trail is marked as closed; take this into account when planning a stop for refreshments.

The fitness trail loop leads to a viewing tower with views of the Alps and includes a fitness course with 16 stations. The Ysper-Weitental circular hiking trail also leads to Stiegeramt, one of the many scattered settlements in Sankt Oswald.

Landscape and Views

Rolling meadows and dense forests define Sankt Oswald. The village lies north of the 1,013-metre-high Burgsteinberg; to the south, the view extends as far as the Alps. A viewing platform on the Burgsteinmauer, at an altitude of 975 metres, overlooks the valley. In clear weather, views from the Burgsteinmauer extend across the Southern Waldviertel, the MĂĽhlviertel and the Alpine foothills to the Alps, from GroĂźer Priel in the Totes Gebirge to Schneeberg and Dachstein. The viewing platform offers views of the valley; in clear weather, the long-distance views also take in entire landscapes and individual peaks. Since summer 2019, a larch-wood summit cross and a summit logbook have stood on the Burgsteinmauer, where visitors can sign their names. The Heart Stone resembles a human heart; as its name suggests, the Skull Stone resembles a skull.

Church and Traditions

The church in Sankt Oswald, built by Friedrich von Stephaning, was elevated to parish church and consecrated in 1160 by his uncle, Bishop Konrad of Passau. Parish newsletters dated August 15, 2026, and August 17, 2025, describe the blessing of herbs as an old custom: Chaplain Thomas Schmid blessed small bunches of herbs, which were handed out after Mass.

St. Oswald Swimming Pond

St. Oswald Swimming Pond is located 100 metres west of Sankt Oswald in a peaceful setting. It has a sunbathing lawn, a children's playground and a canteen. As the facilities may change, check which of them are currently available before your visit.
