Schwallenbach can be explored through its architectural and ecclesiastical history as well as through the Danube: the branch church of St. Sigismund preserves fragments of frescoes, and the Danube Cycle Path’s fifth northern-bank stage runs as far as just beyond the village. The Wachaubahn’s request stop and the available bus connections are also relevant for planning.

Local History and Church Art

Schwallenbach, as part of the historic “Locus Wahowa,” was first mentioned in a document as early as 830. The branch church of St. Sigismund offers another point of reference in time: it was first mentioned in 1419. Fragments of frescoes depicting St. George and an oversized figure of St. Christopher have been preserved on the outside of the church. The altarpiece of St. Sigismund was painted by Kremser Schmidt in 1767. The early references, frescoes and dated altarpiece provide distinct, tangible points of reference for the village’s history.

Schloss Glöckerl vom Schwallenbach is another notable historical feature. The heritage listing dated 23 June 2026 lists the castle at Schwallenbach 27 as a protected monument. Its irregular structure includes a four-storey tower and an open arcaded courtyard. The castle was rebuilt by the Polheim family in 1617. Anyone interested in architecture will find another distinct subject here alongside the church’s history, without needing to assume that the interior can be visited.

Rannahof includes a farmstead and a square tower. It later belonged to the Pauline monks’ monastery at Oberranna.

Planning Your Trip by Train, Bus and Bicycle

Schwallenbach is a request stop on the Wachaubahn. If you want to board or alight here, you must request the stop in good time using the stop-request button. Check the current timetable before travelling. A bus stop is a few minutes’ walk from the station; buses from there run to Krems an der Donau and Melk. Stop locations and bus connections may change, so it is worth checking the latest information.

Bicycles can be carried free of charge on Wachaubahn trains if reserved. A reservation is therefore part of your planning, even though there is no fare for carrying the bicycle. Check the current carriage conditions in advance. This lets you consider train, bus and bicycle as different parts of your journey without assuming a particular connection or transfer.

The Danube Cycle Path, Walks and Local Refreshments

The fifth stage of the Danube Cycle Path on the northern bank runs from Emmersdorf to Krems. Along the L7140, it runs from Willendorf in der Wachau to just beyond Schwallenbach. This makes the village a point of reference on a described section of the cycle route; road conditions may change, so check them before setting out. For a more leisurely outing, a long walk along the Danube near Schwallenbach is also possible.

The area around Schwallenbach station includes natural sandy beaches. Schwallenbach is part of a locality within Spitz an der Donau.

You can plan a tasting at the Muthenthaler wine and fruit farm in Schwallenbach. A selection of fine wines and fruity specialties can be sampled on site; confirm availability before your visit. Buschenschank Schauer is a Heuriger in Schwallenbach. Check its current opening hours in advance too, so your plans fit the visiting times.

These different options offer a range of ways to shape your stay: the history of the church and castle, the cycle route and walks along the Danube, and local wine and fruit products. Which ones you combine depends on whether your plans focus more on architecture, outdoor activities or stopping for refreshments.
