Weitra offers several perspectives on local history: its castle, medieval fortifications, textile craftsmanship and beer culture sit alongside a landscaped park on the Lainsitz. When planning a trip, you can tailor your itinerary to your interests—from exhibitions and historical traces to a walk in the countryside.

Castle, Old Town and Craftsmanship

In 1581, Weitra Castle was converted into a magnificent Renaissance castle based on plans by imperial master builder Pietro Ferrabosco. The castle museum explores more than 800 years of the history of the town and castle. It also offers insights into the craftsmanship and regional economic history of the Waldviertel: the museum’s scope ranges from Weitra’s own history to regional topics.

The Alte Textilfabrik Museum brings the history of production to life through machinery and equipment. The techniques on display include weaving, dyeing, printing and finishing. It also explores how weaving developed through the interplay of home-based and factory work. The Sgraffito House offers a different focus, showing scenes from the legendary early history of Rome as recounted by Titus Livius.

The historic town wall around the Old Town is in good condition and almost entirely preserved. You can explore it along the “Fortified Weitra,” “Tradition & Crafts” and “Top Ten” themed trails. The Upper Gate is also a listed monument; the corresponding entry is dated 23 June 2026. From the castle tower, you can see Weitra and its medieval town wall. The townscape thus brings together fortifications, a town gate and the history of the castle, without these sights telling the same story.

Between Town and Countryside

At the foot of Weitra, the Gabrielental valley stretches along the Lainsitz. The landscaped park dates back to the 19th century and offers a scenic counterpoint to the Old Town’s historical attractions. If you’d like to combine your stay with a hike, the Gabrielental–Schützenberg circular trail is one option: it is listed as an easy 4.40 km hike. Check the route distance again before setting out.

Another route option is the Gabrielental–Reinprechts–Brühl–Gabrielental circular trail No. 31. It starts at the Kneipp facility in the Gabrielental valley in Weitra. For stops in Weitra, Hearonymus offers a free audio guide in German and Czech that you can use on your smartphone. This gives you the option of audio commentary in your choice of language in addition to a walking tour.

Beer Culture and Evening Activities

The Weitra Beer Mile winds through the picturesque Old Town and offers unusual perspectives on beer at nine stops. The Erlebniswelt Bier (Beer Experience World) adds the history of brewing to the mix: it explains which raw ingredients were used in the past and are used today, and how brewing techniques have changed over the centuries. Opening is seasonal, so check whether it will be open on your travel dates.

An evening tour with the night watchman offers a different perspective on medieval Weitra. The tour lasts about 1½ hours. While the Beer Mile explores beer at nine stops in the Old Town, the night watchman’s tour takes you through medieval Weitra. If you’d like to plan one of these activities, check the tour date or the seasonal opening of the Erlebniswelt Bier in advance.
