Leobersdorf offers practical points of reference for planning a trip: the railway station as a starting point for cycling routes and the oldest part of the town around the church. This gives you a choice of distinct focuses: the landscape or local history.

Cycling Routes and Points of Reference

The Triesting-Gölsental Cycle Route starts in Leobersdorf, follows the Triesting, and passes directly by the railway station. This makes it easy to reach by public transport. The Leobersdorf Family Loop also starts and ends at the station; along the way, it passes the pump track and the Generations Park. The loop’s name is simply a route designation: its course and starting and ending points are the practical details to use when planning.

The Leobersdorf pump track covers an area of about 1,300 square metres, of which around 545 square metres are paved riding surface. There is a free large car park at the event centre on Färbergasse 9, near the Generations Park. From there, it is a five-minute walk to the park via the shaded Triesting cycle path. As parking rules can change, it is best to check them before setting off.

The Dornau Loop offers a different connection to the landscape: it runs through peaceful floodplain woodland to the Wiener Neustadt Canal and the EuroVelo 9 route alongside it. The routes can therefore be distinguished by their respective points of reference: the Triesting, railway station, and Generations Park for one; the floodplain woodland, canal, and EuroVelo 9 for the other.

The History of Lighting and Museums

LEUM presents the history of lighting, from pine splints to LEDs. Interactive texts and films connect the stages of its development, while hands-on and scent stations engage sight, hearing, smell, and touch. If you are planning a visit with a group or school class, please note that group tours and special visits for school classes are available by arrangement. Make arrangements before you arrive.

The museum in the Dornau Art Mill explores a different subject. It displays historical views of the mill, tools, and old signs. Its focus is the history of the mill and the working life there, while LEUM covers the development of lighting.

The Church, Settlement Traces, and Religious History

The oldest part of Leobersdorf lies around the church. Roman finds from the church area support the interpretation that it was almost certainly a Roman watchtower. The parish church of St. Martin in Leobersdorf is a late Baroque hall church, remodelled in 1775. Traces of historic settlement can still be seen today on Mariazellergasse; many houses have the ground plan of Franconian row farmsteads. The Federal Monuments Authority describes the Halterhaus as important to local history.

The Heilsame Brunnen, or Healing Well, south of Leobersdorf on the road to Sollenau, is also part of the town’s history; it is a regionally significant pilgrimage site. Its spring was first mentioned in 1466 in Christoph von Spaur’s Urbarium as the “Heylige Prunn.” Historically, the well was the destination of annual supplication processions on St. Florian’s Day, 4 May. The date and historical custom give the site a distinct connection to the past without implying that the processions take place today.

The Avar cemetery of Leobersdorf contains the remains of 171 individuals. Its analysis refined our understanding of changes in fashion and, in turn, the chronology of the Avars; it also made a significant contribution to further Avar research. An article from 2019 also described how the blue-painting artists of Leobersdorf revived an old tradition by painting ceramic jugs based on original patterns.

A Regional Touch on the Plate

MĂĽhlsteinstube serves local fish sourced exclusively from Gut Dornau. The fish are prepared either on a griddle or in the oven. This adds a distinctive culinary theme to the cycling routes, museums, and historic sites that make Leobersdorf a compelling destination to plan a trip around.
