Alland combines a cultural and historical focus with a range of ways to explore on foot or by mountain bike. When planning, it is worth distinguishing local circular routes from a hiking stage between Baden and Alland; the Via Sacra also has a particular connection to the area between Gaaden and Alland. The parish church, dripstone cave and other historical themes add different points of interest to the choice of routes.

Churches and Historical Connections

Alland Parish Church is an early Romanesque, three-aisled hall church with late Gothic features. The term “three-aisled” describes its layout, with a main nave and two side aisles. Those interested in sacred architecture can appreciate two different aspects of the building in its church layout and late Gothic features. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1115 in the patronage book of Klosterneuburg Abbey. In 1135, Alland parish was named as one of 13 Babenberg proprietary parishes. The dates refer to different records: 1115 concerns the church, while 1135 concerns the parish.

The Babenbergerhaus in Alland is the birthplace of Frederick of Baden-Austria, the last ruler from the House of Babenberg. The building is privately occupied. The Museum of Karmel Mayerling offers a different historical focus, with an exhibition featuring original artefacts related to the Mayerling tragedy of 1889. The house and the exhibition represent different historical connections: Frederick of Baden-Austria and the tragedy of 1889.

Cave, Trails and Natural Environment

The Alland dripstone cave is equipped with a modern lighting system and multimedia components. It takes about ten minutes to walk from the car park to the cave entrance. Allow time for this walk and check parking options before your visit, as parking conditions may change.

The Alland hiking trail network includes circular routes that allow hikers and walkers to return to their starting point in the market town. The first stage of the “G'schichten aus dem Wienerwald” hiking trail is different: it runs from Baden through the Helenental valley to Alland. When hiking, you can choose between a loop that returns to its starting point and a stage from Baden to Alland.

The Via Sacra is a pilgrimage route in the Vienna Woods that is still in use today, with a connection to the area between Gaaden and Alland. The Vienna Woods and the immediate surroundings of Alland also have mountain bike routes for different skill levels and preferences. When cycling, you can choose a route to suit your skill level and personal preferences. Alland lies within the “Wienerwald – Thermenregion” Natura 2000 bird sanctuary. For travellers who take protected-area designations into account when choosing a destination, this is also part of the picture of Alland.
