Ritzing lies in Central Burgenland, on the southern edge of the Ă–denburg Mountains. Several different highlights can guide your travel planning: trails through vineyards and along the former Iron Curtain, a municipal nature reserve, Sonnensee lake, and sites commemorating the past as well as local church and mining history. When choosing your activities, you can decide whether nature, activities on the water or local history should take centre stage.

Natural Areas and Sonnensee Lake

The Ritzing municipal nature reserve includes a wetland habitat along a small stream, a rise with Pannonian dry grassland and a small quarry. A short marked path leads gently through the different habitats. This offers a way to explore a protected natural area whose distinctive features stem from several different landscape elements.

Sonnensee is a bathing lake outside the village of Ritzing, near the Helenenschacht district, and can be reached via a well-maintained road. The site covers 42,000 square metres; it is described as having spacious sunbathing areas and clear, warm water. Facilities include water slides, a diving platform and a swimming island, as well as a sandy beach, beach volleyball court, children’s playground and tennis courts. The lake focuses on swimming and leisure activities, while the nature reserve is defined by its habitats and marked trail. The availability of individual facilities may change; check before your visit.

Cycling and Hiking Trails

Ritzing has cycling and hiking trails along the former Iron Curtain. Nordic walking and running routes wind through the vineyards. One specific cycling route is the R62 from Ritzing to Neckenmarkt: this connecting cycle path is 5.75 kilometres long. These details provide different options for planning, without requiring you to combine all the routes into a single tour.

A border crossing near Ritzing now allows pedestrians and cyclists to follow cross-border hiking and cycling routes to the university town of Sopron, 25 kilometres away. For another hike, the mining memorial in Ilonaakna (Helenenschacht) on the Austrian side is listed as the starting point: the tour is called “In the Footsteps of the Giant Trees in the Experimental Forest”. Trail conditions may change; check the current situation before setting out on foot or by bike.

Memorial Sites and Architectural History

The mining memorial commemorates Ritzing’s long history of coal mining, first in open-cast mines and later in the “Helenenschacht” shaft. A memorial stone in front of the monument commemorates the victims of the “Iron Curtain”. There is also a memorial at Helenenschacht to its victims; it was inaugurated on 14 November 2009. One of the memorial stones there is dedicated to Josef Faßl. These sites focus on different subjects: they commemorate mining and the consequences of division.

The Rosalia Chapel in Ritzing was donated in 1732 by a soldier from the victorious armies of Prince Eugene, in connection with the capture of Belgrade in 1718. It is protected as a historic monument under an ordinance. Ritzing parish church is dedicated to the Apostle James the Elder; its artistically valuable high altar from the 17th century is adorned with consecrated limewood figures. Those interested in religious architectural history can therefore visit both a chapel with a documented history of its founding and a parish church with a more particularly described altar.

The memorial to the victims of Nazism in Ritzing commemorates the 18 murdered Romnja and Roma and the three victims of Nazi “euthanasia” from the village. A plaque lists the victims’ names and their dates of birth and death. The Langes Cross stands outside Ritzing on an old Roman road. The Telek Cross is at the entrance to the village from the direction of Lackenbach, at the turn-off to the cemetery. These location details help distinguish the different memorial and commemorative sites.

Practical Information

Three modern playgrounds with age-appropriate play equipment for children aged three to twelve are spread throughout the municipal area of Ritzing. Their condition and opening arrangements may change; check the current details before visiting. Overall, Ritzing offers several different highlights to consider when planning your visit: protected habitats, routes for cycling and hiking, leisure activities at Sonnensee lake and various places of historical significance.
