Castle ruins, local history and forest trails show Hornstein from different perspectives: one trail leads to 18 stops in the town center, while other activities focus on the forest, the Leitha Mountains and the Danube floodplain. There is also a fun park, guided llama hikes, cycling routes and the combination of Hornstein wine with regional cuisine. When planning, the type of experience is what matters most – local history in town, nature along trails of various lengths, or a steep climb to the ruins.

Local History and Castle Ruins

The historical walking trail runs through the town center and includes 18 stops. They focus on the history of individual buildings and objects. This makes it possible to discover Hornstein’s local history along a series of specific stops. The Hornstein castle ruins offer a different glimpse into the past: they are the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle and a cultural and historical monument. Archaeological excavations within the ruins suggest that the site was fortified from the 13th century onward.

The ruins lie on a wooded hill above the town and offer views across the Leitha Mountains and the surrounding countryside. The steep ascent begins next to Hornstein’s municipal cemetery. If you plan to visit the ruins, allow for this climb as a distinct part of your visit.

Hiking Trails Through Forest and Countryside

The 13.5 km nature experience trail passes through fields, meadows, forest and water. Its length sets it apart from the two forest experience trails in the pine forest of the market town of Hornstein: Forest Experience Trail 1 is about 2.5 km long, and Forest Experience Trail 2 is about 2.8 km. Trail 2 is therefore slightly longer; both routes feature information boards, activity stations and animal figures. These introduce children to the forest habitat and its inhabitants.

The Sonnenberg offers another perspective on the landscape. At 484 m, it is the highest elevation in the Leitha Mountains. From the observation tower, visibility permitting, views extend from Lake Neusiedl to the Lower Austrian foothills of the Alps, including the Rax and Schneeberg mountains. Hornstein therefore offers a range of nature experiences: forest and water along the nature experience trail, the forest habitat on the experience trails, and far-reaching views from the observation tower.

Cycling, the Fun Park and Llama Hikes

Hornstein can be reached by bicycle via the Leitha Cycle Route B11. The Leithaberg route is a separate option: a mountain-biking trail that runs mostly through the forests of the Leitha Mountains. When planning, note that these are two different things – the B11 is the cycling connection to Hornstein, while the Leithaberg route is a separate mountain-biking option. Local signs and trail conditions may change; check them before your ride.

Hornstein Fun Park covers more than 4,000 square meters on the site of the former BMX track on Schlossberg and currently includes a pump track. Facilities may change, so check what is currently available before your visit. Guided llama hikes offer another way to experience the landscape: they start in Hornstein, are led by trained llama guides and pass through the Leitha Mountains. You can also explore the wild, romantic floodplain along the Leitha with the animals. Check booking details before your trip.

Hornstein Wine and Regional Cuisine

At Hornstein’s restaurants and wine taverns, you can sample Hornstein wine alongside regional specialties. This adds a culinary focus to the choice of local history and nature experiences. Individual businesses may change; check in advance to find out about the venue you have in mind.
