Get to know Breitenbrunn through its culture, cycling routes and the landscape around the reed belt. A cultural trail with more than 50 stops leads to museums, churches, wayside shrines, and listed townhouses and farmhouses. This connects local history with specific routes and landscape features. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether cultural sites, cycling or nature will shape your stay.

Cultural Trail, Tower Museum and Market Tradition

The Tower Museum is housed in a three-storey tower. It was built as a residential tower in the 13th century and later converted into a defensive tower. Its building history thus brings together two different functions in one place. The cultural trail also offers insights into different forms of local heritage: in addition to churches and wayside shrines, the stops include historic townhouses and farmhouses.

The Johannis Market is also part of local tradition. Breitenbrunn has held market rights since 1689; the market takes place on Thursday during Johannis week. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with it, check the date before your trip. This timing helps distinguish the market as a special reason to visit from cultural and landscape attractions that are relevant year-round.

Cycling Routes and Walking Trails

Breitenbrunn lies on the B10, the Lake Neusiedl Cycle Route. The B12, the Cherry Blossom Panorama Cycle Route, runs for 40 kilometres along the foothills of the Leitha Mountains. The cultural route connects the two cycling routes and leads to sights in the town centre. The cycling routes and cultural sites can therefore be seen as different aspects of the local themed route, without treating them as the same type of route.

The B12 route passes vineyards and thousands of cherry trees. From mid-April to May, the trees turn into a sea of white blossoms; the exact flowering time can vary. If you are travelling to see the cherry blossoms, this period offers a guide, but it does not guarantee a particular stage of bloom.

For a walk between two specific points, there is the 3.3-kilometre Reed Educational Trail, which connects Breitenbrunn’s main square with the natural lake bathing area. The Rosenberg circular walking trail is 3.8 kilometres long and is designated as an accessible walking trail. The routes therefore differ both in length and in whether they connect two places or form a loop.

Reed Belt, Natural Lake Bathing Area and Landscape

The reed belt is an essential part of the Lake Neusiedl Biosphere Reserve. You can walk through it on your way to or from the natural lake bathing area. Breitenbrunn’s natural lake bathing area lies on a peninsula in front of the reed belt and has a sand-and-pebble beach and a spacious sunbathing lawn. The route, the setting by the reeds and the bathing area’s facilities offer different ways to enjoy a stay by the water.

Birdlife is also part of the character of the reed belt. Species mentioned there include the great egret, grey heron, purple heron, black-crowned night heron, little egret and Eurasian spoonbill. Another landscape feature is the Thenau-Riegel, which covers 50 hectares and is one of the largest areas of dry grassland in Burgenland. The reed landscape and dry grassland thus represent two different natural environments to consider when choosing your excursions.

Cherry Products and Wine Culture

Regional cherry products take centre stage at the Cherry Market and the farmers’ market with its gourmet trail. As the dates are important for planning your trip, check them in advance. A guided wine culture hike with a Fiaterjause offers another connection between the landscape and regional food culture. It starts at the historic Kellerring, leads through the vineyards to the legendary Weiernbründl, and then on to the viewpoint on Mitterberg. At the Weiernbründl, a traditional snack eaten by vineyard workers is served. For 2026, the hike is listed from 1 April to 30 October; check the schedule before your trip. The wider region’s winemaking tradition dates back to Roman times.

These offerings give you different focuses for planning your trip: local history and market tradition, cycling and walking trails, or nature and wine culture. When looking for accommodation in Breitenbrunn, you can consider which of these aspects of the town is especially important for your stay.
